Dysfunction in Action
What is the joke? This is a police Corona checkpoint near the Hemed Junction a few hours ago.
The only problem?
The police did not check or ask questions to the people in a single car. Instead, what they created was a massive traffic jam.
The News on the Israeli Street
The daily Corona (Covid-19) update . . .
There are 233,265 confirmed cases—an increase of 6,165 since this time on Sunday
165,191 of these confirmed cases have recovered—an increase of 7,654
772 are in critical condition—an increase of 44
209 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—an increase of 9
1,507 have died–an increase of 66 since this time on Sunday
1,436 are hospitalized.
There are now 68,074 active Corona cases in Israel.
Please note again that the above numbers are since this time on Sunday. There was very little testing of any sort during Yom Kippur except for people seen at the hospital or in Israeli-Arab areas.
We can expect a surge in the next week–PM Netanyahu told hospitals this morning to prepare for at least 1500 critically ill patients by this time next week.
Interestingly but not surprisingly, 64.8% of all newly confirmed cases are in the age group of 0-39 years of age. Only 1.7% are aged 80 and over.
Health Minister Edelstein remarked this morning that “There is no way the closure will end in two weeks.”

Magen David Adom (MADA) reported that its paramedics provided care to 2,360 people yesterday–1,818 of whom had to be taken to emergency rooms.
This included 305 people who fainted or were extremely dehydrated; 129 who were injured in cycling, scooter, and skateboard accidents; and 17 who were injured in road accidents (in the Israeli-Arab areas).
On the bright side, MADA transported 136 women to hospitals to have their babies delivered; one baby was delivered in a MADA ambulance in Jerusalem, and another in Beit Shemesh.
5G network in Israel . . .
This morning the Ministry of Communications granted 5G licenses to three of Israel’s major cellular telephone providers: Pelephone, Partner, and HOT Mobile.
As yet unexplained is why Cellcom, the other major provider, did not receive a license.
The Turkish lira continues to plummet . . .
While PM Erdogan is spending millions if not billions of Turkish lira financing his military escapades in Libya and Syria as well as attempting to take over eastern Jerusalem by creating “civil relief organizations”, the Turkish currency reached new lows yesterday.
At the end of the afternoon, the lira was trading at 7.8 to the U.S. dollar. This comes despite the fact that the Turkish National Bank raised the basic interest rate to 10.25%.

Israel and Lebanon Settle Their Maritime Dispute, But . . .
Chalk up another one for President Trump.
Following extended negotiations overseen by the American administration, it appears that Israel and Lebanon are set to sign an agreement in a few weeks that will settle their long-running maritime territory dispute.
That dispute centers on the area in the above graphic marked “Contested territory.” According to the terms of the accord, Lebanon will receive 58% of the territory and Israel 42%.
Both sides are eager to begin drilling: Lebanon in Block 9 and Israel in Allon D (see graphic).
All of which is good, but you should not think that this agreement in any way signals “normalization.”
Far from it.
In the first place, territorial controversies remain such as the exact land territory boundary between the two countries. For example, the Sheba Farms area near Mt. Hermon remains under dispute. Even Rosh Hanikra, long considered by Israelis as a coastal border point between the two countries, is contested by the Lebanese.
Secondly, the Lebanese, courtesy of Hezbollah, are espousing the position advocated by Iran and Turkey when it comes to “Palestine”, refusing to enter into any peace with Israel until Israel is essentially eradicated. Were Hezbollah not an integral part of Lebanon, that position might be different.
In essence, the maritime agreement may be called a tiny baby step toward peace-nothing more.
