No place is sacred anymore. It’s not enough to deface national symbols and sit atop sculptures and monuments in various stages of undress, yesterday the “protesters” were at the graves of David Ben-Gurion and his wife.
The signs read that Ben Gurion would roll over in his grave if he knew what Netanyahu was doing.
The News on the Israeli Street
The daily Corona (Covid-19) update . . .
There are 253,490 confirmed cases—an increase of 7,996
179,468 of these confirmed cases have recovered—an increase of 4,962
821 are in critical condition—an increase of 18
193 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—a decrease of 18
1,622 have died–an increase of 53
There are now 74,022 active Corona cases in Israel.
There are a number of troubling statistics in the above–perhaps most hidden is the fact that decreases in those on ventilators translates into more deaths.
Another troubling piece of data this morning concerns infections in young people. The Health Ministry reports that between March and August 31, around 12,000 children aged 0-9 were infected. In September alone, another 12,000 were infected.
An important Corona fact . . .
While Israel is now at the top of the list of countries in terms of number of confirmed Corona cases relative to the country population, Israel remains near the bottom of of the list of countries in the West in terms of number of deaths relative to confirmed cases. As of 4 days ago, there were 24,732 confirmed cases per million people in Israel, but the death toll was 161 people per million people.
All of which raises the question of why is there a gap between number of confirmed cases and the number people who have died of Corona? Apparently, one reason is simply because tests are processed much more stringently here than in other places, and what might turn out as positive here could be negative elsewhere because Israel requires 37 rounds of lab cycling whereas countries like Germany only require 30.

TODAY’S BLOG:
7 Shabbat Odds and Ends
1. Delayed again. The evidentiary phase on PM Netanyahu’s trial which was scheduled to begin in early January is apparently being pushed back for at least three weeks.
2. Armenia has second thoughts. Having just established an Armenian Embassy in Israel, the Armenian government has now recalled its ambassador because of reports that Azerbaijan is using weapons from Israel in the current war.
3. More duplicity from Bibi. Netanyahu has now given his blessing to hold a meeting of the Supreme Planning Council of Judea and Samaria for the purpose of approving 5,400 new residences–most of which are supposed to be in ultra-orthodox Beitar Illit. If you really think that these residences will ever see the light of day, I’ll sell you some beachfront property at the South Pole.
4. About those peaceful protests. For the second time in the last couple of days, leftist demonstrators have attacked the broadcast booth of Channel 20 at a demonstration in Jerusalem. Channel 20 is the only non-leftist channel on Israeli television.
5. The closure is a joke. As your humble servant reported yesterday, there is no lockdown. Police manning checkpoints are not checking anything. Traffic seems as heavy as always. In fact, the Transportation Ministry reported yesterday that traffic was 90% of normal.
6. No surprise. The home of another terrorist–this one the murderer of Rabbi Shai Ohayon several months ago–was saved from destruction by the Supreme Court. The demolition was to have taken place today.
6. Unbelievable. According to several newspaper reports this morning, a number of ultra-orthodox families are purposely getting infected with Corona so that they can receive 14 days at a Corona hotel.
7. We can always hope. The number 2 man in the Hamas hierarchy, Saleh Al-Aruri, tested positive for Corona today. In recent weeks, Al-Aruri has been with the leadership of Hamas, the PLO, and Hezbollah.
