TODAY’S BLOG:
Continuing Election Returns: Electoral Chaos
We will continually update this blog as the results come in.
As of this time, 4:00 pm, 88% of the votes are in. 3,861,314 votes have been counted; 546,000 have not. Most of these are the so-called double votes (soldiers, diplomats, people with Corona) which will be counted today and tomorrow with the final results coming on Friday.
UPDATE 4:00 PM Israel time
Once again, Israel appears on the verge of post-election chaos.
**the anti-Netanyahu coalition has 56 seats: Yesh Atid 17, Kahol Lavan 8, Labor 7, Yisrael Beiteinu 7, Joint Arab List 6, New Hope 6, Meretz 5
**the pro-Netanyahu group has 52 seats: Likud 30, Shas 9, United Torah Judaism 7, Religious Zionism 6
**the two outliers which can tilt the election are Ra’am (5) and Yamina (7).
The pro-Netanyahu group would have to make a coalition deal with both Ra’am and Yamina to reach 61 seats. The problem is that while Ra’am (a Islamist Israeli-Arab Party) and Yamina (a right-wing party) might both support the prime minister, they are fiercely opposed to each other ideologically. Already there is a fight within Likud today as to whether Ra’am might be part of a government.
On the other hand, the anti-Netanyahu group only needs either Ra’am or Yamina to push it over the top.
