The News on the Israeli Street

The strange of saga of the Haniyehs . . .

As you all probably know by know, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s 17-year-old niece was being treated for cancer in Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv while Hamas was shooting thousands of missiles at us. In fact, she received a bone marrow transplant while there.

This was actually not surprising given the fact that Haniyeh’s daughter and mother-in-law have received regular treatment in Israeli hospitals.

In fact, as you may not know, Haniyeh’s three sisters all live in the southern Israeli Bedouin town of Tel as-Sabi, and some of their children have even served in the IDF.

Now comes the story that Haniyeh’s wife has been stuck in Gaza for two years while her husband has been gallivanting around the Middle East living on the millions of dollars reaped from countries’ and humanitarian entities’ donations and the 10% commission that Haniyeh reportedly receives on all items smuggled into Gaza.

She has been stuck because Egypt would not permit her to leave.

News came yesterday that now Egypt has given her permission to join her husband in Doha, Qatar. Apparently, upon receiving the permission, she told reporters: “I am never coming back to Gaza.”

Netanyahu is Haman?

It is beyond absurd to term Netanyahu “Haman” when Netanyahu has spent a lifetime trying to protect Israel and the Jewish people from external threats, and to call him that name is to show how bizarrely crazy the leftists in Israel have become.

It is worthwhile remembering how the protests against Netanyahu began 12 years ago after the 2009 election. You may remember that in that election, Tzipi Livni’s Kadima Party actually received 29,000 more votes than Likud. However, because she was unable to form a coalition and Netanyahu was, he became prime minister. Left-wing protesters surged onto the streets fraudulently accusing Netanyahu of stealing democracy.

Throughout the next 10 years, Netanyahu’s enemies tried to find anything they could to oust Bibi finally centering on the charges of corruption which finally resulted in indictments in Cases 1000, 2000, and 4000. Of course, none of these charges have been proven, but that did not stop the Black Flag protests that began taking place on street corners, at Rabin Square, and out in front of the Netanyahu residence at Balfour.

Those protests were fully supported by a leftist media here in Israel determined to get rid of Netanyahu.

But the fact is that a remarkably resilient Netanyahu weathered these demonstrations and would still be Prime Minister today were it not for himself.

A leftist commentator for the Jerusalem Post, Susan Hattis Rolef, expressed it well in the newspaper this morning where she writes that almost all of the “sober politicians” of the new government:

“. . . are graduates of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Byzantine court. Among the ministers of the new government, Naftali Bennett, Ayelet Shaked, Gideon Sa’ar, Avigdor Liberman, Benny Gantz, Ze’ev Elkin, Yoaz Hendel and Yifat Shasha-Biton are among those who have personal experience to trying to survive in a political environment in which the ambition of anyone who is not Netanyahu is frowned upon, promises and signed agreements are not worth the paper they are printed on, and blind obedience is the only personal trait appreciated.”

All of these leaders of the new government were underlings of Benjamin Netanyahu and all of them were touted at one time or another as being possible successors to Bibi. However, Netanyahu’s method of operation over the years became painfully clear. He would welcome up and coming Likud stars to his orbit, give them added responsibilities, and then–the second they posed a threat to him by not showing blind obedience–he would cut them off at the knees.

But as became painfully obvious over the last month, all Netanyahu was really doing was continually shooting himself in the foot. Had he not viciously attacked and dumped Bennett or Shaked or Sa’ar or Liberman or Gantz over the years, he would still be prime minister this morning. Instead of building friendships and forging long-term alliances, Netanyahu created enemies.

To summarize and repeat, the demonstrators and the media– “We” of the statement at the top of this blog–did not get rid of Netanyahu, Netanyahu is the one who ultimately brought down himself.
