The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

Not surprisingly there have been a rash of terror attacks in the day following the Flag Parade, and also not surprisingly, no missiles have been fired at southern Israel and no major multi-casualty attacks have taken place.

To put it a different way, all of the threats coming from Gaza and Ramallah were just hot air. Hot air, lest we forget, that caused the government to shake in its sandals.

Here’s a short list of terror attacks:

Palestinians attacked near Eviatar. One terrorist was killed.

A Palestinian tried to run over soldiers near Hizma, then got of his car and tried to stab soldiers. A soldier was lightly wounded. The terrorist was shot and killed.

A Palestinian terrorist armed with a knife was neutralized in Hevron at the Cave of the Patriarchs.

At least a dozen fires were started by explosive balloons launched from Gaza causing an estimated 500,000 shekels in damage. In response, the IAF attacked Hamas areas in Gaza. Could this be the start of a new policy under PM Bennett? We certainly hope so.

What took place in Jerusalem late yesterday afternoon was not so much a Parade or a Walk but an extraordinary demonstration of Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem!

A wildly exhilarating demonstration.

We arrived in Jerusalem at about 4:30 in the afternoon and made our way down Jaffa Street from the train station. Long before we reached the Education building down near City Hall, we were immersed in flag carrying throngs of young people who were singing and dancing as they took over the sidewalks and the light rail tracks.

The energy in the air was palpable at the staging area. Led by youth from Bnei Akiva and Im Tirzu, a joyous and fearless energy surged back and forth through the crowd which was unified in its desire to display Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem and to give the finger to the Palestinian terror organizations.

Of course, Israeli police both uniformed and undercover were everywhere as were Border  Guards, Border Police, and IDF soldiers. One had to wonder why it took two canceled marches for Israel to marshal such a show of force.

After about an hour, we made our festive way down to Sha’ar Shechem where passions came to the fore with derogatory chants against Arabs. A group of leftist “Pastors for Peace” appeared on a balcony holding signs and were hooted away. More than this, there was no shortage of praise for Netanyahu and condemnation of Bennett going around.

This praise/condemnation was a little hard for your humble servant to understand given the fact that it was new PM Bennett who gave the final ok for the parade.

In any case, the celebrations continued unabated.

Finally, the crowd moved on to the Jaffa Gate and then to the Kotel.

I have to say that rarely have I felt such joy in Israel and such hope for the future. If these young people were any example, that future is in good hands!
