The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .

So much for our hope yesterday that PM Bennett would pursue a more aggressive route against the balloon launchers in Gaza than did PM Netanyahu. There have been 22 fires along the Gaza Border today.

And what has the government and IDF done in response?

Nothing.

The fight over extending the Citizenship Law . . .

. . . continues to rage. The Coalition which wants to continue to extend the law which bans the unification of Palestinian and Israeli Arab families has become a test case. Netanyahu’s Likud has proclaimed that it will only support the extension if the law is turned into a permanent one (it currently must be reapproved every year).

Interestingly, the Coalition needs the support of Likud because the Raam Party underpinning the Coalition, and the Joint Arab List adamantly oppose the law in any form.

Our Trip To Beit Eshel In Beersheva, Part 1

Fresh from our exciting participation in the Flag Parade in Jerusalem, we returned to Ashdod only to head out yesterday to Beersheva.

The purpose of our trip was to visit Beit Eshel, the first Jewish community in the Negev in thousands of years.

Established in 1943, it was home to my father-in-law from 1947-1948. It was where he first served in the Palmach.

Now 91, he wanted to go back to Beit Eshel again.

We started our trip from the south Ashdod interchange going down Highway 4 past the plain where Judah Maccabee fought the Romans and the site of the original Ashdod which was first mentioned in texts in 3500 BCE as a textile trading center famed for producing purple linens (the purple created from a local mollusk in the sea).

As we continued down the road, we passed a new road sign indicating “Gush Katif Village” beside Nizzanim. Gush Katif Village is the unfortunate place where many of those thrown out of Gush Katif in northern Gaza back in 2005 were forcibly relocated to container type houses.

Some of those who came here have since left, but for your humble servant the Village is an ugly reminder of a terrible decision made by Ariel Sharon which hung  8,600 Israelis out to dry.

Traveling on we reached ever-expanding Ashkelon with its new north entrance. All along the way we were passing numerous large trucks all loaded with construction materials such as pipes and concrete–all headed for the Erez Crossing into Gaza. It was a pathetic sight considering the fact that the south was–at that very minute–being set ablaze by explosive balloons launched by Gaza terrorists.

Apparently there is no limit to Israeli stupidity.

From there we turned left before the Crossing and headed toward Sderot and then on toward Beersheva. From the road, this was our scene on the right side:

Through the smoky haze (cause by the nearby fires), we were looking at Gaza.

Tomorrow we will resume with Part 2 which will include one of the most remarkable sculpture pieces that we have ever seen.
