TODAY’S BLOG:
” . . . We were 11 soldiers with orders not to shoot
facing almost 5000 Palestinian terrorists.”
The title of today’s blog are the words of a fighter who served with St. Sgt. Barel Shmueli who was shot at point-blank range in the head at the Gaza border fence on Saturday.
Here is more of what he said (as reported by Amir Bohbot, military correspondent for Israeli media):
“The firing instructions were not clear. On the one hand, the officers explained to us what we should do if we were in danger of death, and on the other hand they warned us that we had to get a shooting permit which could only be used in exceptional cases.
And we were told that all the shooting had to be documented, and if not we would be reported. What do you understand from that?
We even had to get permission to fire rubber bullets, and getting this permit took a long time.
What most surprised me? Their use of explosive devices which they threw over the wall.
The most significant problem? We did not know we were in danger. We couldn’t see armed terrorists approaching the fence. No one warned us in real time of terrorists. It turned out that we were 11 soldiers with orders not to shoot facing almost 5000 Palestinian terrorists who reached the fence.”
In other words, our general staff, commanders on the ground, and the accompanying legal officers from the military prosecutor’s office, completely neutered our soldiers once again exposing them to mortal danger.
As we reported yesterday, all of the violence directed against our soldiers had absolutely no effect on our absurdly idiotic government. Blackmail money continued to be dispersed by the Qataris in Gaza, and the Kerem Shalom Crossing opened even wider for the shipment of goods into Gaza–including items that had been blocked for months such as computers and other electrical devices.
However, at least one government reacted . . . the Egyptian government. Following the violence and the shooting of Staff Sgt. Shmueli, the Egyptians announced that they were closing down the Rafah Crossing from Gaza into Egypt indefinitely. In doing so, they let it be known that the reason was because Hamas encouragement of violence violated the agreements Hamas had with Egypt.
Meanwhile, Staff Sgt. Shmueli remains in extremely critical condition in an induced-coma following intensive brain surgery.
Yesterday, some of his fellow fighters arrived at Soroka Hospital and sang this prayer for healing at his bedside:
Sickeningly, not one government official or IDF senior officer came to the hospital. Where were PM Bennett, FM Lapid, “Defense Minister” Gantz, and IDF Chief of Staff Kochavi?
As usual, nowhere to be seen.
Nitza Barel, the mother of the wounded soldier, reported this morning on Israel radio that PM Bennett called her home in the middle of last night, but did not even know the name of her son. She angrily demanded to know why her son had been placed on the border with orders not to shoot.
