The News on the Israeli Street
The absurd situation on the ground in Area C of Judea and Samaria . . .
Consider the juxtaposition of events today:
The Israel High Court agreed once again–at our Concession Government’s request–to postpone the evacuation and razing of the illegal Palestinian settlement Khan Al-Ahmar near Ma’ale Adumim. As you may recall, the Court ordered these actions nearly 2 years ago, but successive governments have pusillanimously continued to postpone action. A new date of March 6, 2222 was set by the Court.
At the same time as this decision was being rendered . . .
Officials of the Civil Administration, along with forces from the Border Police and the IDF, descended on a small outpost that Jews had set up near Yitzhar.
The entire outpost was forcibly evacuated and razed, except for one small building in which a Jewish community member has chained himself to the floor:
As always, the message of these two events is clear: illegal Palestinian construction in Area C is protected while tiny Jewish outposts are destroyed at will.
The daily Corona update . . .
5,159 more Israelis were confirmed “yesterday” as having Covid-19. There are now 55,315 active cases in the country.
1,274,395 Israelis have contracted Corona since the pandemic began.
The positive test rate yesterday was 3.87%.
660 Israelis are in serious condition with another 227 in critical condition on ventilators.
7,692 Israelis have died–8 since yesterday.
Vaccinations:
6,096,487 Israelis have received 1 dose.
5,621,478 Israelis have received 2 doses.
3,252,662 Israelis have received 3 doses.

One Flag. One Brave Young Woman.
The Islamic Ra’am Party here in Israel–the Party that is holding the Coalition/Concession Government together–issued this statement yesterday:
“The racist right has recently been trying to exploit the Al-Aqsa Mosque for political purposes. We are warning the Israeli Police and the government that Jews carrying Israeli flags to the Temple Mount is a red line.”
This was followed this morning by this blast from Balad Party Chairman Abu Shehadeh who wrote on Twitter: “The Bennett-Horowitz-Abbas government apparently learned nothing from the intifada last May, and is leading to another round of escalation. The Palestinian people have decided that the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem in general are a red line, and it is not possible to cross it or make any change in the status quo. The only change that will be accepted is the end of the occupation. No Israeli flags are permitted on the Haram esh-Sharif (Temple Mount).”
After reading these two comments, you would think that hundreds of flag-waving Israelis had marched around the Temple Mount.
Actually, this is what happened two days ago:

One brave young woman.
One flag.
And we might add, one flag that was quickly and unfortunately seized by a policeman.
So who is this young woman?
Her name is Lauren Isaacs.
She is the Canadian Director of Herut.
In fact, the ever-ebullient Lauren has made quite a name for herself. Here’s a photo from two years ago:
After the above photo and ensuing controversy occurred, an article about Lauren was written by Ron Csillag and appeared in the Canadian Jewish News (6/14/2019). We reprint it here (note how Lauren corrects Csillag’s description of the Kipat HaSela as an “Islamic holy site”):
A young Toronto woman who held a pro-Zionist flag at an Islamic holy site in Jerusalem says she is receiving death threats, but has no regrets.
Lauren Isaacs, 23, the recently-appointed Toronto director of Herut Canada, caused websites and social media to light up when she held the blue-and-white flag of her organization while standing before the gold-topped Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine, on the top of the Temple Mount.
“Damn right” was the caption Isaacs posted to Facebook, along with the photo of herself with the flag. In a telephone interview from Israel, Isaacs said those furious over her action “are threatening to shoot me, to stab me, to hunt me down.”
Amid strong support for her action, [Isaacs recounted some of the threats against her]:
–They know where I live and they’re coming for me.
–They will destroy me.
–I’ll be going to hell and they’ll make sure I get there quickly.
–I better watch my back because the next bullet is for me.
It has been “typical stuff,” she added with a laugh.
Media in Israel picked up the story that began when a smiling Isaacs unfurled the Herut Canada flag, which is similar to Israel’s, during a visit to the Temple Mount with her mother on June 11.
The reports said the pro-Hamas Al-Quds channel slammed the image of Isaacs with the banner as “a mark of disgrace on the forehead of 1.6 billion Muslims.”
As for less-heated accusations that her actions were provocative or disrespectful, Isaacs said, “I think that’s ridiculous. I was not provoking anyone. And I did not intend to incite anything. Holding a flag doesn’t incite anything. It’s prideful. It’s peaceful, celebratory, it’s happy. Everyone should hold their flags with pride.”
She said she has “absolutely no regrets. I stand by what I did 100 per cent. I’m a Jewish Zionist and I’m proud. It’s a holy Jewish site.”
While her mother took the photo, “No one bothered me. No one questioned me. No one saw me,” she said.
Isaacs did not report the threats to Israeli authorities and said she has not decided whether to go to Toronto police upon her return. “Right now, I’m monitoring the situation. This is my first experience with violent threats and so much hate mail,” said Isaacs.
She said she was in Israel for a month “to do some Jewish studying and a little bit of work for Herut Canada.” After a lengthy dormancy, the organization was reconstituted last spring as a grassroots educational charity “that cares about unapologetic Zionism,” Isaacs said. The Herut (Freedom) party was created by former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1948. It merged with Likud in 1988.
“Everyone should have more pride and not be afraid to show pride for their country, for their people, for their nation and for their religion.… Just waving a flag is a phenomenal celebration of happiness and pride. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that and more people need to acknowledge that the Temple Mount is a place that’s OK for Jews to celebrate.”

A small addendum:
Following the threats of Ra’am and Balad, Knesset member Itamar Ben Gvir had this to say this morning: “We are all tired of the fervor of MKs from Balad and Ra’am who incite violence and encourage terrorism. I will go up to the Temple Mount with the Israeli flag.”
