Ready for some khachapuri for breakfast?
As we all know, Israel is a melting pot of Jews from all over the world who bring their foods with them and have those foods adopted and changed by the people already here. Numerous dishes have arrived here with the huge community from Georgia including khachapuri–a canoe-shaped pastry crammed full with cheese and topped with a fried egg. You can even get this tasty treat in a vegan version with beans or a seafood non-kosher version with shrimp and calamari sauted in garlic butter. Here in Ashdod we have a wonderful Georgian restaurant, Petra, with a wide assortment of khachapuri.

The Palestinian strategy—which has remained unchanged since the terror group’s founding in 1964 by Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas–is “phased war” which has been summed up by Michael Kelly as follows:

The population numbers as 2021 comes to a close . . .
According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics:
9,449,000 people now live in Israel.
73.9% of the population is Jewish, and 21.1% of the population is Israeli-Arab; the remaining 5% is comprised of people who are neither Jewish nor Arab.
184,000 babies have been born in Israel this year: 73.8% of them to Jewish mothers and 23.4% of them to Arab mothers.
Approximately 25,000 new immigrants arrived in the country this year along with approximately 9,000 illegal migrants.

The new immigrants primarily came from Russia (30%), France (14.6%), the USA (13.9%), and Ukraine (12.4%).
51,000 Israelis died in 2021–5.4 deaths per 1000 people (higher than the 5.1 per 1000 last year). The Bureau speculates that the slightly higher number was because of Corona.

The number of newly confirmed cases continues to soar with 4,875 new cases yesterday. Health “experts” predict we could see 20,000 new cases a day within two weeks.
For the first time, we actually have a few facts about Omicron morbidity. Despite the fact that half of all the new cases are Omicron, only 10 patients in Israel have been hospitalized with the variant. 4 of these patients are still hospitalized in serious condition, and 2 patients died.
The new Corona restrictions today are that masks must be worn inside or outside tonight in New Years celebrations if one is in a group of more than 50 people. Obviously, it is up to each individual to determine the size of the group he or she is with.

2021 comes to an end the same way it began with Palestinian terrorism in all directions. One of the hardest hit areas has been that around Hizma in which 41 “rock and Molotov” attacks have occurred this month alone–including 17 attacks on buses which wounded 7 bus drivers.

The egregious “prisoner exchange” deal grows closer . . .
Avraham Mangisto: one of the Israeli “prisoners being held by Hamas. Mangisto is an Ethiopian-Israeli with a long history of mental problems who walked into Gaza voluntarily.
According to Egyptian sources, Israel and Hamas are on the verge of “prisoner” exchange deal–which would better be termed “a body parts and mentally unstable persons for murderous terrorists deal” because all Israel will receive are the body parts of two soldiers killed in 2014, and two or three mentally challenged young men who walked across the border into Gaza of their own volition.
So, it appears the outrageous deal has three stages:
1. Israel will release 322 women and “children”. The “children” are murderers or attempted murderers aged 15-18. In return Hamas will turn over a video to show that the two or three young men are alive.
2. Israel will then release 488 terrorists who have long sentences because they murdered or tried to murder Israelis (so-called “blood on their hands prisoners”). In return, Hamas hands over “the body parts and prisoners” to the Egyptian mediator.
3. Israel will then release 1,111 Palestinian prisoners who were incarcerated before the year 2000 and all of whom are from Gaza including 18 leaders of various terror factions in Gaza. In return Hamas will do nothing.
As if Corona is not bad enough . . .
The H5N1 avian flu epidemic also continues to rage here in Israel with more than 10,000 dead cranes found at the Ahula Nature Reserve in the north, and more than 600,000 chickens having been put to death around the country.
Yesterday another outbreak of the avian flu was discovered at Moshav Barak in the Jezreel Valley. 5,500 chickens which produce about 100,000 eggs per month, 2.4% of the Israeli organic egg market– were destroyed yesterday afternoon.

Your humble servant dislikes ending the year on a down note, but . . . the on again off again “open fire” rules for our soldiers in Judea and Samaria have changed again.
On December 8th an IDF Givati force with a sniper went on an ambush to thwart a terrorist attack against Israelis emanating from a Palestinian settlement.
They staked out a position and stopped the terrorists from wounding or killing Israeli men, women, and children.
However, unbelievably, the Military Prosecutor’s lawyers decided afterwards to arrest the commander of the force, prosecute him, and send him to jail for 5 days.
Yes you read that insanity correctly.
This is what it has come to in the “humanitarian” IDF. Soldiers and their commanders on the ground have been completely neutered and in the process all personal initiative has been squashed. Following the December 8th incident, no IDF force can ambush and attack terrorists without the permission of “the upper echelon.”
The people you see in the photo above are members of the “Mothers’ March” whom your humble servant walked with in the summer following the Barel Shmueli murder on the Gaza border. Their goal has been to de-neuter our soldiers so that they can defend us and defend themselves.
Also there in the middle of the photo is the omnipresent Yossi Dagan, the head of the Yesha Council in Samaria. Dagan spoke for the group yesterday and for your humble servant when he said:
“Disgrace. The residents of Samaria and all the citizens of Israel support the IDF fighters. The government should be ashamed. This reality that IDF soldiers and security forces are risking their lives to bring security throughout the state of Israel and instead of receiving a commendation are sent to a military prison is a shame and disgrace.
Lawyers are not the IDF’s moral compass, but warriors and commanders. IDF soldiers should not be afraid to shoot at terrorists and should not hide in bunkers. Imprisonment for shooting at terrorists? Senior IDF officers, come to your senses!”

A student from Malawi, who had worked with an Israeli health volunteer in his country battling AIDS, came up to us as we walked down the street in the UC-Davis Picnic Day Parade and wanted to carry the Israeli flag.
