The Israeli Food of the Day
Your humble servant dares say that virtual no Israeli table is without bread of some sort. One favorite is lafa, a flat bread that was originally cooked on a tabun over an open fire. Traditionally topped with nothing but olive oil and zatar, it has become very popular at shwarma stands where the meat is often wrapped in a flexible lafa instead of stuffed in a pita. Talk about a taste treat!
The Telltale Quote of the Day
“He went with my full approval.”
PM Naftali Bennett, commenting in a press conference concerning the meeting last week between “Defense Minister” Benny Gantz and PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas during which Gantz gave away the farm.
The supposedly right-wing Bennett has spent the last few months distancing himself from comments made and meetings held by his ruling cohorts Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz. Of course, this distancing is hogwash. Bennett, Gantz, and Lapid are in lockstep with each other on their leftist ideology and their embrace of the PLO and Hamas.
The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
Palestinian terrorists repeatedly attacked the fence at Kiryat Arba with Molotovs.
Palestinian terrorists in a passing car again attacked buses at Hizma and between Hizma and Anatot.
Palestinian terrorists attacked Israeli motorists with “rocks” and Molotovs in Huwara south of Shechem, at Al-Fawwar, near Peduel, on Road 446, on the Gush Etzion-Hevron Road, at Al-Abuv, and at a dozen other locations.
Palestinian terrorists attacked a police checkpoint in Hevron.
The daily Corona update . . .
6,545 newly confirmed cases of Corona yesterday—the number keeps rising.
33,909 active cases of Corona in the country—the number keeps rising.
114 Israelis in serious condition, 37 in critical condition on ventilators—the numbers have started to rise.
8,244 total deceased since the pandemic began—this number, thankfully, has not changed.
The Health Ministry decided yesterday that all those 60 years of age and older can receive the 4th booster. The question is how many want to?
In other information, the Association of Mall owners announced again yesterday that it will disobey the government order to check shoppers as they enter malls to be sure they have been vaccinated. They issued a statement saying: “We will provide service to the vaccinated and unvaccinated.”
Good news in Judea and Samaria . . .
Less than a week after we had Transportation Minister Merav Michaeli gushing that not one agorot has been budgeted for Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, we have Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked riding in to save the day.
Yesterday, she announced that the Interior Ministry has issued unique grants totaling 140 million shekels (about $44 million dollars) to the communities—an increase of 76% over last year’s grants.
One official in Samaria noted: “This is what keeps the councils above the water, and this year it keeps us higher above the water–especially with security challenges we face.”
We here at OneIsrael have been critical of Shaked of late, but she deserves much credit for going against the flow of the government.
The silent “right of return” . . .
For some years now, the so-called “Family Reunification” system–which allows Palestinians living both inside and outside of Areas A and B to register with the Palestinian Population Registry (which is controlled by Israel) has been frozen.
However, it has now been unfrozen. Yesterday, some 10,000 Palestinians, 3,000 of whom live in Gaza were approved for “family reunification.” The result is that these 10,000 will now be able to possess Palestinian identity cards and Palestinian passports, and avail themselves of whatever amenities Ramallah deems appropriate. It also means that these Palestinians will be able to pass through Israeli checkpoints.
And it means that they will be counted as populating “Palestinian areas” (aka Areas A and B of Judea and Samaria). However, almost certainly, these Palestinians will be shuffled off illegally to Area C for Palestinians to establish facts on the ground.
TODAY’S BLOG:
“Enough for Corona! Release the Herd”*
[Today’s blog is a slightly abridged reprint of an opinion piece that appeared on Walla! yesterday, written by Eran Tiefenbrunn. Addressed to Israeli readers, it expresses what many Israelis feel and what we have been reporting here in terms of the endless, confusing restrictions issued by the government concerning Corona. As you read it, note this is not a diatribe against vaccination.]
“For two years we have been dealing with the plague, and it is time to stop, understand what we have had, and draw brave conclusions. Do any of you understand the “traffic light” restrictions? Does anyone understand the “outline of education” for the schools? the “shopping mall regulations”? the “restrictions for foreign tourists “? where it is allowed or forbidden for Israelis to fly?
Doesn’t the Israeli government have more important things to deal with than spending every weekly meeting on the question of what to open and what to close?
Enough! Enough with this! . . . Enough of the restrictions! Enough of shutting down life!
Those who have been vaccinated – there is a good chance that even if they get sick, they will get through it easily.
Those who have not been vaccinated–it is their problem: they are mature people with intelligence who have decided not to get vaccinated and this is their problem. Leave them alone and let each and every one of us consider his or her considerations–even if in your opinion, and in my opinion, they come to the wrong conclusions . . .
And what about the collapse of the hospitals? Government of Israel, deal with it . . . If God forbid we reach a state of burden on the hospitals – it will be your failure government ministers. Because only in strengthening the medical system should you have been working day and night. Leave the citizens alone. Deal with the system.
And the endless tests. Unnecessary antigen, expensive PCR. And a waste of time! Standing in line for hours for an irrelevant test. A waste of money and time and energy and nerves. Like the blood-letting and leeches of the Middle Ages. We invent for ourselves rituals of corona whose usefulness is zero!
There is a possibility that we are going to live a long time with this virus attack. We need to learn to live with it. We cannot and should not engage in nothing but defensive measures and in the process eliminate our lives.
Children need to grow up and learn, girls and boys need to go out and spend time, adults need to work, and old people need to live in the arms of their families.
Enough to shutting down life! Open everything and let the herd come out.”
And so it goes in a rainy Israel this morning.
