The Oldest Tree in Israel

This olive tree is thought to be the oldest tree in Israel.

This olive tree is thought to be the oldest tree in Israel.

The huge olive tree is in an orchard at the Abelim Junction in the western Galilee. It is believed to be at least 4,000 years old–which means that it was there when Abraham first set foot in the holy land.

The Idiotic Quote of the Day

“Planting trees in the Negev is an anti-environmental act.”

Israel Minister of the Environment, Tamar Zandberg, expressing her opposition to the KKL planting trees in the northern Negev near Beersheva.

Statements like the above are what come out when people are placed into positions based on political considerations rather than knowledge.

Your humble servant remembers that it was just a month or so ago that he was standing under a lone acacia tree in the Negev listening to a scientist discuss the incredible ecosystem that a single tree spawns all around it and under it. That scientist was ruing the fact that more trees were not in the area.

The News on the Israeli Street

Palestinian terrorism in the last 24 hours . . .

A Palestinian terrorist attempted to stab soldiers and civilians at the Gush Etzion Junction. The following photos are screen shots from a video made by a passing motorist. In the first photo, you see IDF soldiers with their guns still pointed at the terrorist whose legs and feet can be seen on the lower left:

The daily Corona update . . .

There is no Corona update today because the Health Ministry’s Corona database website has now been down for more than 25 hours.

The fact that it is down is somehow symbolic of the chaos at the Health Ministry.

A remarkable day in Chomesh . . .

Just when it appears that all is lost and that governmental destruction of the yeshiva is imminent, there was another outpouring of support for Chomesh yesterday.

More than 1500 students from other yeshivas somehow managed to make it through the siege perimeter set up by the Civil Administration and police. They brought food, water, wine, and even their own generators to produce electricity for a celebration of Tu B’Shevat:

Can you imagine the effort it took to shlep all of these cooking utensils, food, and heating elements into Chomesh.

TODAY’S BLOG:

Will He or Won’t He?

All of Israel is abuzz at this hour with news that PM Netanyahu is on the verge of signing a plea bargain that would bring his trials and the investigations into his alleged wrongdoing to a close.

One sign that such a bargain is imminent is the fact that suddenly most of the leading figures in the Likud Party are announcing that they will be running for Party Chair as soon as the deal is struck. Just in the last hour, Miri Regev, Tzachi Hanegbi, and Nir Barkat have tossed their hats into the ring.

Others are sure to follow.

Your humble servant does not, however, want to put the cart before the horse.

I still find it hard to imagine that Netanyahu would admit to any moral turpitude–especially if it would keep him out of politics for the next 7 years as is apparently the deal.

Stay tuned for further details.
