The News on the Israeli Street
and
Today’s Blog
All the news today pales to the unbelievable Corona numbers that just came out of the Health Ministry.
550,751 Israelis now have an active case of Corona.
Think about that for a moment.
550,751.
One month ago, the number was just over 5,000.
It can no longer be said that Corona is “surging.” Israel is in the midst of nothing less than an explosion of the virus.

If that number is not bad enough, the positive test rate yesterday was 23.23%.
23.23%.
If you recall, it was not so long ago that the government was crowing that this rate was less than 1%, and anything more than 1% was supposedly indicative that the virus was “out of control.” And now it is 23.23%.
Unfortunately, the number of people dying each day is also increasing rapidly. Today the total number of Israeli dead stands at 8,481–an increase of 23 from yesterday. 1 or 2 per day has now increased to almost 2 dozen per day.
What is the government reaction to this lamentable litany?
The best that anyone can offer is that “there may be evidence that the current wave will peak in mid-February” (the Health Minister this morning).
At the rate things are going, mid-February may well see a million active cases in Israel, and deaths at 50 or more per day.
Of course the irony is that the current group of motley characters running the government regularly lambasted former PM Netanyahu for how he was handling Covid-19, and now they find themselves completely out of their depth.
Your humble servant is not sure what anyone can do to stop rampaging Corona, but the least Bennett, Lapid, and Gantz can do is to acknowledge Netanyahu’s efforts and demonstrate a little humility.
As we know, that will never happen.
