All Warm And Cozy In Their Beds:
The Unmitigated Hypocrisy of Our Government
There is hypocrisy and there is utter hypocrisy. How would you describe this situation?
It was barely a month ago that our sorry excuse for a government voted for the “Electricity Law” which was created with for the express purpose of providing electricity to illegal Bedouin settlements scattered throughout the Negev and Galilee regions.
In the process of voting for that law, the Coalition voted against an amendment that would have provided electricity to the dozens of young Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. To put it a different way, the government happily threw these communities under the bus.
Fast forward to yesterday when Israeli television channels broadcast videos of shivering children in these communities huddled around makeshift stoves and campfires trying to stay warm in the freezing cold.
These videos were coupled with news pieces about how security personnel are readying their vehicles to carry gasoline-powered generators to these communities to create “hot spots” to provide power during the expected intense snowstorm on Wednesday and Thursday.
So what do we have this morning?
Our thoroughly disgusting “Defense” Minister Benny Gantz announced that he is “working to approve” the connection of electricity infrastructure to “most of these communities.”
Gantz, who as “Defense” Minister has total decision-making power over Area C of Judea and Samaria, says that he will make “a final decision” on the matter in the coming days. Again, all Gantz has to do is sign an order and it will be done.
But Gantz and the government are using electricity as a weapon against the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria. You may recall that it was Gantz who specifically ordered the cutoff of electricity and water to the Chomesh yeshiva compound in northern Samaria earlier this month in order to try to force the last holdouts of the yeshiva out.
Just after Gantz’s announcement, FM Yair Lapid chimed in that the young communities are “illegal outposts”, but that “Israel has a commitment there.” Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked declared: “the connection to electricity in the young settlement is one of the most burning issues and important to me on a personal level.”
Tonight when the temperature drops below zero, and Gantz, Lapid, Shaked, and Bennett are all warm and cozy in their homes, you can be sure that they will not give a whit for the men, women, and children of Judea and Samaria.
