The News on the Israeli Street
The daily Corona update . . .
18,020 new cases of Corona were confirmed yesterday bringing to 299,361 active cases in the country.
The positive test rate was 22.76%.
1,057 people are hospitalized in very serious condition; another 328 are in critical condition on ventilators.
9,466 Israelis have died—an increase of 32 since Friday.
What can we make of these numbers? The number of newly diagnosed declined as did the number of active cases–because of the lack of testing on Shabbat. However, the positive test rate remains at over 20%.
1,244 Israelis have died of Corona since January 1–about 37 people per day.
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
In Jerusalem:
Two Israelis were wounded by Palestinians in the Shimon Hatzadik neighborhood of Jerusalem beside Sheikh Jarrah. This follows a fire at the apartment of Jewish family caused by Molotovs. The last few nights have seen an “open war” on the streets of the neighborhood.
In Judea and Samaria:
Palestinian terrorists hurling Molotovs and “rocks” attacked motorists at the Luban a-Sharqiya Junction, west of Beit Haggai, east of the Zavia Bridge, on Road 443 near the Dor Gas Station, near the Kiryat Arba Bypass, in Huwara beside Einbus Square, at the Avraham Hassano Junction southwest of Hevron, north of Ofra, and on Road 458 near Kochav Hashahar among other places.
Palestinian terrorists attacked IDF troops near the Cave of the Patriarchs setting fire to the outpost there, at the Khursa pillbox, and near Migdal Oz.
Palestinian terrorists attacked the security fence at Psagot with 9 Molotovs, and damaged the observation point near Migdalot, and set fire to the fence at Kiryat Arba.
Palestinian terrorists attacked a police car near El Mu’ayyir.
Thank you to Josh at Rescue Without Boundaries SSF for the above reports from Judea and Samaria.
TODAY’S BLOG
A Kangaroo Court In A Banana Republic
Wednesday of last week we wrote about how the Israel Police used the Pegasus spyware on the phone of former Communications Director Shlomo Pilber –without obtaining a warrant.
The police then used photos, phone numbers, correspondence history found on Pilber’s phone to blackmail Pilber into testifying against the former prime minister in Case 4000.
If such police and prosecutorial misconduct were brought to light in a trial in the United States or in most other countries, a mistrial would immediately be declared at the very least and likely, the case would be thrown out.
However, as we pointed out last Wednesday, “the Israeli judiciary regularly overlooks police misconduct.” I referenced the infamous Duma case last year in which the prosecution was forced to admit that the defendant’s confession had been gained through torture yet found him guilty anyway based on what it called a “preponderance of the evidence.”
I predicted the same would happen in Netanyahu’s case.
And so it happened today.
The court has just ruled that Pilber’s testimony is admissible because even though information was gained without a warrant, “the products of the intrusion on his phone were not subsequently used for the purpose of collecting his testimony.”
This ruling once again underscores that the trial of Netanyahu is nothing more than a kangaroo court being held in a banana republic.
