No Deterrence

Special Notice

Normally, your humble servant would not post a blog on Passover, but the events of the last 24 hours are so egregious that an abbreviated one is in order.

Consider the sequence of events since 3:30 am yesterday (it is now 7 am on Thursday)

1. Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired 22 missiles into southern Israel early Wednesday morning.

2. There was virtually no response. Hamas fired anti-aircraft missiles at the Israeli planes that bombed sand dunes and empty buildings.

3. The government declared that if any more missiles were fired on Passover, there would be an unprecedented response: “In Israel, we make clear and send a clear message to all terrorist elements, wherever they are in and around our country – terrorist activity in any form on the eve of Passover will result in a very severe response, rocket fire or an attack of one kind or another.”

4. Almost immediately, the terrorists in Gaza began firing mortars into Israel in the area of Kissufim. Apparently 3 were intercepted by the Iron Dome. At least 10 were fired in total.

5. There was no response.

6. Early this morning at 5:28 am and 5:38 am there were two more barrages of missiles into Israel in the area around Sderot (Sapir and Dorot).

7. There has been no response.

8. Here is an absurd tweet from last night at 9:22 pm by Almog Boker, one of the most respected reporters concerning what’s happening in southern Israel:

“Currently, Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Galant are containing the shooting into Israeli territory. This night has passed so far without a response to the firing of 2 rockets on Seder night towards Sderot and also without a response to the 7 rockets that night were fired at the Ofakim area and Sha’ar Hanegev.”

Talk about Orwellian terminology.

Israel is “containing the shooting into Israeli territory” by not responding.

Welcome to the passive, deterrence-less, state of Israel on Passover 5783 . . .
