Normalization Is Afoot?
Various reports of interest today:
1. The Saudi Etihad soccer team was supposed to plan an Iranian team in Iran yesterday. However, when the Saudis showed up, they discovered three statues of Qassem Soleimani in the stadium. The Saudis walked out and refused to play.
Apparently, all the talk about a Saudi-Iranian rapprochement has been somewhat overblown.
2. It appears that the Biden Administration informed PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas that the list of demands he made several weeks ago to signal acquiescence to the normalization agreement are “illogical and unreasonable.” What’s more, the report states that on October 17th, U.S. Secretary of State Blinken will arrive in order to deliver this message to Abbas in person.
3. The Saudis have apparently dropped their insistence on the 2002 Saudi peace initiative–which they have adhered to for two decades. Apparently, the Saudis are willing to go forward with less than a Palestinian state; instead, they want a commitment that there will be a Palestinian state “at some point in the future” along with “some mention” of eastern Jerusalem.
A lot of “apparentlys”.
If these reports are correct, normalization may indeed be closer than we think.
