Excellent News from the Olympics

The Olympics have been a pleasant diversion to the ominous situation we are in. Israel has had its best Olympics in history with 6 Israeli athletes already receiving medals so far:

L-r top:

L-r top Artem Dolgopyat (silver: gymnastics-floor exercise); Tom Reuvani (gold: windsurfing), Raz Hershko (silver: judo). L-r bottom: Sharon Kantor (silver: windsurfing), Peter Paltchik (bronze: judo), Inbar Lanir (silver: judo).

Kolekavod to these outstanding athletes who have brought so much pride to Israel in these difficult times!

 UPDATE 9:00 AM ISRAEL TIME

The View From Ashdod . . . On the Ground in Gaza

We went to sleep last night to concussive blasts coming from Gaza. These explosions continued all night and into this morning. It appears that they are coming from an intensive IAF attack on the Al-Fahoura neighborhood of Jabaliya in northern Gaza. Current reports are that 8 terrrorists have been killed there. In addition, there have been drone attacks near Deir Al-Balach in central Gaza.

Unconfirmed reports are that the spokesman for the HamISIS Al-Qassam Brigades, Hudayfa Samir Abdallah al-Kahlout (aka Abu Obaida) has been eliminated by an IAF strike.

On the Ground in the North

Hezbollah launched numerous missiles and explosive drones all along the northern border yesterday focusing on Gonen, Kfar Blum, Lehavot Hashan, Naot Mordechai, Amir, Sde Nehemiah, and Kiryat Shmona.

The IDF spokesman:

“Fighter jets of the IAF attacked Hezbollah targets near Kfar Kila, including terrorist infrastructures and military buildings. Earlier today, an air force aircraft eliminated a terrorist of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the area of Deir Sirin. In addition, the IDF attacked terrorist infrastructures in the Al Adeisa area in southern Lebanon with artillery.”

In Limbo

We sit here in Israel and here reports from all directions about when Hezbollah and Iran plan to attack.

From three U.S. officials this morning: “We expect Iran’s expected attack against Israel following the assassination of senior Hamas official Ismail Haniyeh to take place tomorrow at the earliest.”

From Israeli sources: “The working assumption in Israel is that a combined or separate attack is inevitable, but there is still uncertainty regarding the timing of the attack and especially its scope. Israel is preparing for a number of scenarios, including some difficult ones.”

From Western intelligence sources: “Iran and Hezbollah’s attack may take place on Tisha B’Av, August 12 and 13.”

And on and on.

In short, no one knows when an attack will come, but everyone believes it is on the way.

In the meantime, there is a mad rush by Western and Arab countries to urgently evacuate their citizens from Lebanon, and airlines continue cancelling flights to Israel, Lebanon, and other countries in the region. Also, the U.S. continues to bolster its forces with the Defense Minister ordering in another squadron of F-22’s.

. . . And so it goes this morning in Israel. Who knows what the next minute will bring?
