Eco’s Joke? Humberto Hits The Nail On The Head In Jerusalem

The Jerusalem Book Fair was held this week. It was a book fair at which the noted British author Ian McEwan (Atonement) accepted an Israeli literary prize “as a way of protesting against Israeli policies” and boorishly ranted against Israel in his acceptance speech.  Humberto Eco was also at the event. After the speech, when Eco was goaded by a journalist to condemn Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians, he declined to do so joking, “I have so much to say against the Italian government that I have no time to speak about the Israeli government.” His point is well-taken; those who obsessively criticize Israel should think about cleaning up their own governments first.
