The News on the Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
*Thirteen wanted terrorists were captured in Judea and Samaria–including leading members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
*Three terrorists were captured yesterday evening after infiltrating several kilometers into Israel through the ever porous Gaza border fence.
The Netanyahu pre-indictment hearing continues . . .
Yesterday’s hearing went on for almost 12 hours with Netanyahu’s legal defense team presenting reams of new evidence concerning Case 4000. That case, you may not remember, claims that Netanyahu eased the regulatory burden on the owner of Bezeq and Walla (resulting in that owner’s paying of greatly reduced licensing fees) in return for favorable press coverage on Walla! The police have termed this a bribe.
As we have often pointed out, the easiest way for Netanyahu to refute this charge is simply by looking at the Walla! news coverage of Netanyahu which was anything but favorable during the time in question.
In any case, today’s hearing is about the same case. On Sunday and Monday, the pre-indictment hearings will turn to Cases 1000 (cigars) and 2000 (another case about favorable news coverage–which Netanyahu never received).
A sea change . . . on the roads . . .
Beginning tomorrow for the first time in Israel, there will be car pool lanes.
Yes, given the incredible overload of cars on the road here, can you believe there have been none until now?
At first the car pool lanes will only be on Roads 2 and 20 (the Coastal Highway, and the Ayalon through Tel Aviv). Cars carrying 2 or more people will be allowed to drive in the lanes.
What would you guess is the average number of passengers in private vehicles on Israeli highways?
1.2
Which explains the need for carpooling.
Keep ’em coming! . . .
405,000 tourists arrived in Israel in September and spent $581 million dollars.
This number of tourists is an all-time monthly record for September, and 44% more than September last year.

*The highly anticipated meeting between PM Netanyahu (head of Likud) and Avigdor Lieberman (head of Yisrael Beiteinu) this morning went exactly where most people predicted it would go . . . nowhere. Lieberman rejected various Netanyahu proposals including becoming interim prime minister. Without Yisrael Beiteinu, there is no way to form a “Right Block” of 61 seats.
*Yair Lapid, the titular co-leader of Kahol Levan along with Benny Gantz, has just announced that he willing to forego being prime minister in a rotation with Gantz if a unity government is created with Likud. The impact of this announcement should not be underestimated because the ultra-orthodox parties despise Lapid and may be induced away from the “Right Block” to join Kahol Levan.
*PM Netanyahu let it be known today that he is actively considering holding a Likud primary to rechoose the head of the Likud party. To which his main opponent in such a primary, Gideon Sa’ar, tweeted: “I’m ready.”
TODAY’S BLOG:
Lieberman Declares War On The Ultra-Orthodox
It didn’t take long.
On this first day of the new Knesset, Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu has gone law-proposal wild–most of which are aimed at undercutting the ultra-orthodox.
Some of the laws:
A new Draft Law that has already been rejected by the ultra-orthodox that would compel most ultra-orthodox to serve in the IDF or national service.
A new law abolishing the Supermarket Law thereby empowering local municipalities to allow businesses to open on Shabbat.
A law that will give municipal rabbis the ability to conduct conversions (thereby wresting this power away from the orthodox rabbinate).
A law that would force ultra-orthodox students to study a core of liberal subjects if their yeshiva is to obtain government funding.
A law that would permit civil marriages.
A law that would allow public transport (trains and buses) on Shabbat.
As you can see, Yisrael Beiteinu and its largely Russian constituency has declared war on the ultra-orthodox–and some would say, Judaism.
