Benny Gantz, Israel’s so-called “Defense” Minister speaking in Sha’ar Hanegev on the Gaza border yesterday about the Hamas attacks on Ashkelon and Ashdod on Tuesday night.
Your humble servant doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
How many times in the last three elections did we hear Gantz proclaim that if he were prime minister and Hamas fired even one missile at southern Israel, the IDF would deliver a devastating response.
22 missiles on Tuesday night and a man critically wounded in Ashdod, and guess what? There were no IDF reactions except for the usual bombing of sand dunes and empty buildings.
No terrorists killed, no terrorists wounded.
As the mayor of Sderot said yesterday: “Isn’t it amazing that the only Hamas terrorist who has been killed because of firing missiles at Israel this year was the one who fired a missile at Netanyahu when he visited Ashdod. Why don’t we attack when children in Sderot are attacked?”
Oh and one more thing. The idea that weak-kneed Gantz is issuing a demand to Hamas that they stop firing missiles in Israel is beyond ludicrous–and surely produced uproarious laughter in the underground tunnels of Gaza.

The Missile Attack on Ashdod Two Nights Ago: Four Observations
8:14 pm Tuesday night: the precise moment when incoming missile sirens sent us running to our bomb shelter (this is screen shot your humble servant made from our television).
Note the right side of the photo above. On Israeli news television channels, the precise locations of the expected missile impacts are listed when the incoming missile warning sirens blare.
As you can see, six areas were targeted in the attack:
–the first 4 on the list are neighborhoods in Ashdod
אשדוד (Ashdod in Hebrew)
of which our neighborhood, Tet Vav, was one.
The last two areas were in Ashkelon.
Some observations:
Observation 1: In previous missile barrages on Ashdod, Islamic Jihad has always been responsible. Different Palestinian terror groups in Gaza have been assigned different cities in Israel.
Observation 2: Note that the missile fire came exactly when the Emirati representative began talking. The timing precision and location precision of missiles from Gaza has become remarkable.
Observation 3: Remember this photo that we showed yesterday of the Iron Dome interceptors going up over Ashdod during the attack:

After the attack, the IDF spokesman claimed that “2 missiles were fired from Gaza, one at Ashdod.”
For just a moment, let’s assume that the IDF spokesman was telling the truth about “one at Ashdod”. If so why were 10 interceptors sent up (at a cost of $50K) each? More than this, you will recall that one missile from Gaza exploded in the center of Ashdod outside the Lev Ashdod Mall.
So, are we supposed to believe that 10 interceptors were fired at one incoming missile, and all 10 missed?
On the other hand, this episode once again illustrates why no one in southern Israel believes anything that the IDF spokesman says. If we believe our eyes (the photo) and ears (what we could hear in our bomb shelter), there were numerous intercepts over Ashdod. Whenever a barrage of more than six missiles is fired at Israel at one time at a target, at least 1 missile always gets through.
Observation 4: To sum all of this up, we in southern Israel are nothing but sitting ducks. The terrorists in Gaza fire whenever they feel like it, secure in the knowledge that our government and IDF General Command are utterly impotent and will not respond.
