All four soldiers were from the Shimshon Battalion in the Kafir Brigade. They were killed in northern Gaza in Jabaliya from a bomb blast; incredibly, the IDF does not know whether it was a booby-trapped house or an anti-tank missile that exploded. It was the same blast that killed Maj. Itamar Levin, 34 years old, from Eilat, a team commander, that we previously reported.
You may not remember but months ago, the IDF said that it had cleared Jabaliya. Subsequently, the troops left, but have since returned twice on “raids”.
The IDF now says that this latest “raid” will last for weeks.
According to the IDF spokesman:
“Three brigades under Division 162 are operating in the raid. Hundreds of terrorists, including senior Hamas commanders, have gathered in the area. Although our forces managed to evict tens of thousands of residents from the city in the last month, “with the breaking of the barrier of fear from Hamas”, there are still a few thousand left. The IDF locates weapons stockpiles every day, and eliminates terrorists in face to face combat; however Hamas has booby-trapped more than 200 houses in Jabaliya.”
In point of fact, the IDF strategy of taking a location, leaving, and returning on endless raids exposes our soldiers to endless ambushes.
24 IDF soldiers have now been killed in the fighting in Jabaliya in the past few weeks–mostly from explosions in booby-trapped houses and other IEDs. Jabaliya should be razed.
The War in the North
*Two men were killed in a direct Hezbollah missile strike on a warehouse in Nahariya in northern Israel during the latest rocket barrage. According to the municipality, the hit was east of the city.
*A disaster was narrowly averted in Nesher when a kindergarten teacher barely got her students into a bomb shelter before a missile hit the building.
