Immediately, every news organization is reporting that Obama has sided with the Palestinians and demanded that Israel return to the 1967 border. For example, this is the current breaking news headline on Fox News: “Obama Sides With Palestinians, Tells Israel to Pull Back to ’67 borders”.
But that is not what Obama said at all. He said this: “The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states.” Everyone, especially President Obama, knows that the large Jewish communities just inside the Green Line will never be in a state of Palestine. The 1967 border has to be adjusted with land swaps.
This is precisely the same thing that American, Israeli, and Palestinian negotiators have been saying for at least the past decade. There is virtually nothing new in what Obama said.
