By any definition, Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper has proven a staunch friend of Israel. It is a friendship that Canada exhibits in every international forum from the United Nations to the just concluded G8 meeting.
In regard to the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Harper stridently condemned Hezbollah’s kidnapping of Israeli soldiers and stridently asserted Israel’s right to defend itself against such attacks–a position that put him at odds with many in Canada’s Arab community.
In 2008, Harper declared that Canada would not attend the Durban II conference because of his belief that it would be used to incite hatred against Israel and thereby delegitimize the Jewish state.
In 2009, Harper spoke out forcefully against the barbarity of the attacks in Mumbai–especially the murders of the Chabad rabbi and his wife, describing the murders as “affronts to the values that unite all civilized people.”
In 2010, Canada’s continued unwavering support for Israel led to Canada being denied a seat on the Security Council. Harper’s response was simply that Canada would take a pro-Israel position at the United Nations and elsewhere “no matter what the political cost to Canada.”
This week, Canada insisted that the G8 communique at the conclusion of the meeting not include any mention of the 1967 lines. According to one European delegate: “The Canadians were really very adamant, even though Obama expressly referred to 1967 borders in his speech last week.”
Harper has made his position on Israel very clear: “When Israel, the only country in the world whose very existence is under attack, is consistently and conspicuously singled out for condemnation, I believe we are morally obligated to take a stand.”
