UPDATE: CITIZENS OF SOUTHERN ISRAEL AGAIN ATTACKED BY HAMAS PALESTINIAN TERRORIST MISSILE LAST NIGHT. ISRAELIS ALSO ATTACKED BY TERRORIST IN TEL AVIV. CHECK ISRAELSTREET BREAKING NEWS FOR DETAILS.
Earlier this year, during the period when Mubarak was being ousted in Egypt, your humble servant blogged about Israel giving permission for an increased number of Egyptian soldiers to enter the ‘demilitarized’ Sinai. And earlier this month, before the Palestinian terrorist attacks that emanated from Gaza via the Sinai, I blogged about the total anarchy that had taken over the northern Sinai.
In the aftermath of that terrorist attack, reports of Egyptian army complicity have come to the fore. ‘Intel’ sources have revealed that the Egyptians not only knew about the terrorist force in the Sinai, but also they turned a blind eye to their activities and even abetted them. Reports still linger that several of the attackers were Egyptian soldiers–and the fact that some of the attackers were wearing Egyptian Army camouflage uniforms was barely reported by the media.
In this context comes the new request from the Egyptians that, in addition to the soldiers that Egyptian Army already has in the Sinai–and the ‘peacekeeping’ soldiers the United Nations has in the Sinai– the Egyptians would now like to add 2 divisions of Egyptian troops (about 30,000 soldiers) complete with armored personnel carriers, tanks, and attack helicopters. According to the Egyptians, all of these forces are needed to combat the lawlessness in the area. This request is about to be debated by the Netanyahu cabinet.

Add to this request the very serious intention of the Egyptians to renegotiate the peace treaty with Israel (the public is demanding abrogation). Just this morning, Al-Ahram–the most popular Egyptian newspaper–has reiterated Mahmoud Abbas’ ridiculously absurd claim of last week that Israel actually orchestrated the terrorist events in the Negev.
With all of this as context, in your humble servant’s opinion, somebody might reasonably want to ask the question: “Is it possible that the Egyptians have something else in mind–such as pre-positioning Egyptian forces along the border with Israel”? And even if that is not the current intention, how would those forces be used if a virulently anti-Israel government takes control of the country after the upcoming elections are supposed to take place?
Can the Egyptians really be trusted? Your humble servant thinks not.
