Back on Wednesday of this week, Hassan Nasrallah was cowering in his bunker addressing Hezbollah supporters on a giant TV screen on the occasion of the 6th anniversary of the Second Lebanon War with Israel–a war during which, according to Hezbollah’s own account, it came within days of being wiped out.
The subject of the speech was Syria, and Nasrallah went to great lengths to identify Bashir Assad’s regime as the main supplier of weapons to both Hezbollah and Hamas: “. . . the most valuable weapons we [have] in our possession [are] from Syria. The missiles we used in the Second Lebanon War were made in Syria. And it’s not only in Lebanon but in Gaza as well. Where did these missiles come from? The Saudi regime? The Egyptian regime? These missiles are from Syria.”
And therein lies the problem. Syria has a vast arsenal of weapons which could easily be transferred to Hezbollah or simply seized by the terrorist organization–given the fact that Hezbollah has been fighting in Syria for months alongside Assad’s troops.
What kinds of weapons are we talking about?
Let’s start with the fact that Syria apparently has “hundreds of tons” of chemical weapons and nerve gas which are stockpiled around the country. Most of the nerve gas is Sarin and VX gas–both of which are incredibly deadly.
Add to this the fact that Syria has multiple missile delivery systems (of course, nerve gas in cannisters can also be ‘hand-delivered’):
*300+ Scuds of the type used by Saddam Hussein against Israel in 1991. These are 35 feet long with a range of 400 miles.
*200+ North Korean SS-21s. These are 20 feet long with a range of 120 miles.
Syrian SS-21 on a mobile launcher. This missile can easily be tipped with chemical or nerve agents (source 3234.com).
*50+ Iranian Fateh 110s. These are 20 feet long with a range of 50 miles.
*50+ Russian supersonic Yakhont cruise missiles
All of these missiles are mobile (can be launched off of wheeled vehicles) and are capable of carrying poison or nerve gas.
The threat of war hangs over Israel this morning with Defense Minister Ehud Barak absurdly announcing to the world yesterday that Israel is preparing for “a military intervention” in case Bashir Assad falls or if there is evidence of missiles or gas being transferred to Hezbollah.
The problem is that Bashir Assad is going to fall–and Hezbollah is undoubtedly already taking weapons out of Syria. Short of a NATO or U.N. strike against Assad (neither of which seems likely), there seems to be little else for Israel to do except defend itself by taking control of the missiles and stockpiles itself because there is little doubt what Hezbollah will do with them.
Back to Wednesday, Nasrallah concluded his rant by eulogizing the members of Bashir Assad’s inner cabinet who had been killed earlier in the day. He was particularly praising of Syrian Defense Minister Daoud Rahja and his deputy Assef Shawkat: “These shahids were our comrades in arms, in the resistance and in our struggle against the Israeli enemy.”
