UPDATE 9 am Israel time Thursday:
At 9:41 pm last night, the Chof Ashkelon region–which is just north, south, and east of the city of Ashkelon–was hit by rockets fired by the terrorists in Gaza. Children were awakened and taken to their family’s bomb shelter–and mothers and fathers waited until the sirens stopped, the explosions were heard, and they could emerge from their bunkers once again.
So it goes every night in southern Israel.
And by the way, once again, the IDF did not respond and has done nothing to stop the continuing missile assault on Israeli citizens.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Here is the international “human rights” narrative about Gaza: the “poor peaceful” Palestinians, “victimized” by the “evil Israeli oppressor”, are locked in “the largest outdoor prison” in the world. “Businessmen cannot do business”, “students cannot study”, “no one can freely come and go”, and “no one is safe.”
It is in this context that the following headline on the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency website this morning caught your humble servant’s eye:
“Over 100 Gaza families flee Syria”
The article goes on to state:
“Hamza Abu Shanab of the Gaza-based Palestinian Coalition for the Syrian Revolution told Ma’an that 105 families originally from the Gaza Strip have returned safely through Egypt’s Rafah crossing in recent days. The families had business ties in Syria or were students studying at Syrian universities, Abu Shanab said.”
Wait a minute . . . Did we read that correctly?
Palestinians are escaping to Gaza? Gazan families have business in Syria? Gazan students study at Syrian universities? Palestinians can ‘safely’ come and go through Egypt’s Rafah crossing?
What a shock! You mean to say that the “human rights” narrative really isn’t true after all? Stop the presses!
Oh, and there’s more about the “peaceful Palestinians”. The Ma’an article goes on to point out:
“Meanwhile Palestinian resistance leaders and fighters living in Syria have arrived in Gaza. One of them . . . is Nidal Abu Kamil who was deported 20 years earlier. Islamic Jihad’s Ibrahim Shehada has also returned.”
As violent as Nidal Kamil is Ibrahim Shehada is more so. As you may not know, Shehada is the Islamic Jihad terrorist who has been the head of Islamic Jihad’s “overseas operations” for most of the last decade. Living in Damascus, Shehada has been the money man, receiving money from Iran and distributing it to terror cells in Gaza (and in Judea and Samaria).
Shehada’s focus for years has been rockets, and the money he has sent to Gaza has largely been used to finance the building of Qassam rockets. Apparently, every time a Qassam is launched out of Gaza at the citizens of southern Israel, Iran pays Shehada who funnels the money (after collecting his carrying charges–Shehada is rich) to the terrorists in Gaza.
Pardon the black humor, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what Shehada’s return means to us sitting ducks here in southern Israel.
In sum, it looks like the situation in Gaza is just not as bad as the “human rights” folks would have us believe–with the free flow of Gazans in and out, Gazans doing business and studying abroad, and Gazans escaping to Gaza because it is safe there. You might remember all of this the next time you hear someone in your locale going on about Israel “victimizing” Gaza.

Follow-up to israelstreet blog Palestinian Economics 101 of three days ago :
Four days ago, in a blog entitled Palestinian Economics 101, your humble servant discussed how the corrupt Palestinian government/economy is almost entirely donor-driven, and that donor money is drying up because the PLO/PA has produced nothing with the billions of dollars and Euros that have flowed in.
Yesterday the World Bank agreed, concluding that the Palestinians are unready for statehood: “The Palestinian economy cannot sustain statehood while it continues to rely heavily on donor funds . . . It is skewed toward the public sector and non-tradables . . . and aid levels have already begun to fall . . .”
