4 Days Until The Election

**Today is the last day (thankfully!) that polls can be published prior to the election, and in this poll-crazy country, the polls seem to agree that the Herzog-Livni party is widening its lead on Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud.

That lead is between 3 and 4. There is still another poll out there that has a very different set of numbers (Geocartography has Likud up by 2), but that poll is definitely the odd man out.

Once again, your humble servant is compelled to say that the entire polling system here in Israel is an outright fraud, and I have no doubt that the pollsters are working in tandem with the media (most of the polls are actually commissioned by the media) to create the sensation that a surge has developed for Herzog-Livni.

As I have noted in blogs during the last week, perhaps that surge is real.

And the bad news for Netanyahu continues to mount.

In interviews given on Israeli TV last night, Avigdor Lieberman (Yisrael Beiteinu) and Moshe Kahlon (Koolanu) gave Bibi supporters no reason to hope. Lieberman apparently will not even answer Bibi’s phone calls about possibly forming a post-election coalition, and Kahlon said that he has not spoken to Bibi in a year and a half.

In short, Bibi has burned his bridges so completely that he can expect little support from those who should be his closest natural allies.

Having said that, Netanyahu can still offer Lieberman and Kahlon more than Herzog-Livni can–namely, Lieberman the position of Foreign Minister again, and Kahlon the position of Finance Minister which he desperately wants. Herzog-Livni already have other people lined up for each of these posts.

So all hope is not lost, but there are few bright spots as of this Friday morning if you, like your humble servant, want a government on the Right.
