1 Day Until The Election

**Tomorrow is election day here in Israel, and according to the Election Commission there are about 5.8 million Israelis who are eligible to vote.

How the election will turn out is anyone’s guess at this point, but what we are all fighting for was made apparent several days ago in an interview given by Yitzhak Herzog to his personal television network, Channel 10.

When asked about his support in the year 2000 for the Clinton plan that would have divided Jerusalem, Herzog dissembled:

“Many years have passed since then, and the way to deal with an agreement today is to see whether there even is someone to talk to. We must examine whether the Palestinian leadership is ready to go for such a move.”

What does this gobbledygook mean?

It means that Herzog is still ready for an agreement that will divide Jerusalem if only he can find a Palestinian to talk to, and believe your humble servant that the Palestinians will line up at Herzog and Livni’s door for the great Israel and Jerusalem giveaway should Herzog and Livni assume the prime minister’s officer.

Herzog continued:

“Jerusalem must remain united as Israel’s capital. Period. But some sort of arrangements can be worked out.”

Say what?

Israel’s capital, but . . .

Herzog and Livni will give away the store.

TODAY’S BLOG:

WOW! That is one of many words your humble servant could use to describe the exhilarating rally for the “Right” last night in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv.

From the moment we exited the HaShalom Train Stop at Azrieli and started the 30 minute walk to the venue, we were surrounded by hundreds of excited people walking in the same direction waving Israeli flags and signs supporting Netanyahu, Bennett, and Yachad.

As we turned right on Ibn Gabirol street, Bennett and Yachad supporters were just getting off more than 100 buses and were already dancing in the street. Even though we already had our own flag and signs, we picked up even more from Netanyahu and Marzel supporters who were animatedly giving them out on street corners.

About half way down the street, security forces had blocked off the street, and the crowd began to swell. By the time we got to Rabin Square, there were already thousands of people moving through the booths that had been set up on the Square perimeter. Everything was pouring out of the booths including signs, literature, and T-shirts.

This was all taking place at 6:30 am, 90 minutes before the first speaker was scheduled to take the rostrum. Fairly quickly, people began to press in toward the area in front of the speaker stand, though a rectangular area of 10 x 5 meters had been cordoned off and was being patrolled by police and those from Netanyahu’s security detail.

This picture is a blur–such was the sea of people at the rally last night.

The mood in the crowd, even as we packed in like sardines, was joyous and ebullient. It was as if people finally had a chance to say everything they felt about the vicious campaign against the Prime Minister. And the chants began:

OO ah mi ze ba

Rosh ha memshalah arba!

Ooh, ahh, who is coming

The next Prime Minister!

Meanwhile, circles of people continued the dancing we had seen in the street. Young yeshiva men and women seminarians were jumping up and down in unison, and the crowd all got into the act. People sang the old Zionist standards that were playing over the public address system.

Promptly at 8:00 pm, the program began with the first fiery speech being given by the rally organizer Daniella Weiss. She set the tone for the evening by launching an attack on the Israeli “left” focusing on Herzog, Livni, the Israeli media, and international entities (especially Americans and Europeans who are seeking to topple the “Right”). By the time she finished, the crowd was even more pumped up and ready for Netanyahu and Bennett.

Each of them was stirring in his own right. Speaking from behind bulletproof glass, Netanyahu excoriated the “Left” and how it was willing to give away Jerusalem and much of Israel. He was repeatedly interrupted by chants of “Bibi! Bibi! Bibi!”

Netanyahu was immediately followed by Bennett who gave a blistering address in which he repeated his desire to not give away “one centimeter” of land to the Arabs. He repeated what his parents had taught him: “How can you occupy land that was yours to begin with.” Then Bennett brought the house down by taking out his guitar and leading the crowd singing the famous song “Jerusalem of Gold.”

The rally went on with Eli Yishai of Yachad and others exhorting the crowd.

All in all, it was a FANTASTIC experience, and one that will hopefully give momentum to the “Right” as we head into the election tomorrow.

Two last notes: as usual, there has been a battle this morning having to do with how many people actually attended. The Yedioth Aharonoth newspaper, the cheerleader for Herzog-Livni, reported that 10,000 people came. The organizers of the rally reported 100,000 in attendance. The truth, your humble servant would suggest, is in between–between 40,000 and 60,000.

A good description was given by a reporter for the Jerusalem Post:

“The crowd was younger and, as one would expect, much more religious and outwardly patriotic than the anti-Netanyahu rally a week ago, with a far higher Israeli-flag-to protester ratio and an astronomically higher “kippa saturation.” The crowd also appeared larger, though with the Israel Police and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) keeping photographers off rooftops, it was hard to get a clear idea by how much.

One thing was certain, though: In talking to the people there, the race is not over yet.

Finally, who is your humble servant voting for tomorrow?

As you all know by now, I am a Bennett man. I believe that Naftali Bennett is the person who should lead Israel, and is the only person who has a realistic plan for dealing with Judea and Samaria.

Having said that, the problem tomorrow is a pragmatic one. The rightist party Yachad is teetering on the edge of the 3.25% threshold necessary to gain seats in the Knesset. If the Right is to have any chance of defeating Herzog and Livni, Yachad must pass that threshold.

For this reason, your humble servant will be casting his ballot tomorrow for Yachad.
