A Profile in Courage: Ayala Shapira Celebrates Her Bat Mitzvah!

UPDATES:

5 am Israel time, Sunday, June 14 2015

**There have been a number of severe “rock” and Molotov cocktail attacks overnight. Palestinian terrorists in the Hawara area set fire to passing cars, while in the north a young Israeli driver was wounded badly in the face by a large “rock” that smashed through his front windshield.  Despite heavy loss of blood and broken facial bones, he still managed to drive himself to a hospital.

**Not surprisingly, a group of some 300 Israelis–mainly actors, actresses, and artists–are submitting a petition today protesting the recent action of Education Minister Bennett who has denied government funds to finance a play glorifying an Arab murderer.

The first paragraph of the petition tells you what you need to know:

“We – creative artists and cultural figures (including film, theater, visual arts, music, literature, dance and architecture) – are protesting against the anti-democratic actions taken in recent weeks by government ministries against artists and cultural figures whose works or views do not coincide with the wind blowing in these offices.”

Anti-democratic? Since when is it a democratic right to have a play funded by the government? Governments all over the world make decisions all the time about which art to fund and which not to.

By the way, thank goodness a strong “wind is blowing in these offices” these days–a wind that will not perpetuate the efforts of artists, cultural figures, or anyone else to delegitimize Israel and enable its enemies.

As we all know, the freedom of speech is not absolute.

**There have been increasing calls during the weekend by some Druze on the Israeli Golan Heights for Israel to come to the rescue of the Druze under attack by IS and al-Qaeda in Syria.

The entire situation in Syria is murkier than ever today. From reports yesterday, we know that:

–the senior Iranian commander in Syria was killed several days ago and his body returned to Tehran along with those of 65 other Iranian revolutionary guards killed in Dara’a.

–Hezbollah is suffering losses of from 10 to 15 soldiers a day in the battle for the Qalamoun Mountains, including 14 yesterday.

**What is happening with the western capitulation to Iran in Geneva? It all depends on whom you listen to. The Russians say the talks are at a standstill; some Iranians (such as President Rouhani) say that there is a good chance for a deal before the June 30th deadline, but other Iranian spokesmen have suggested that reaching an agreement with the P5+1 by June 30th is not a matter of “life and death” and that there will be another extension.

Meanwhile, John Kerry has “heroically” gotten out of his hospital bed and is apparently heading for Switzerland to take command of the appeasement and capitulation.

Ayala Shapira.

Ayala Shapira as she was last year.

Ayala Shapira. A name you may not remember.

Think back to December 25th of last year. Ayala was riding with her father on the way home from a math class near their Samarian home in El Matan when a Palestinian terrorist threw a Molotov cocktail into the window. The car was immediately engulfed in flames.

Eleven year old Ayala was engulfed in flames as well–as is obvious from the above picture of the car taken hours after the attack.

But despite having 3rd degree burns over 50% of her body, Ayala got herself out of the car, rolled over on the ground to put out the fire on her body, and then miraculously walked a few hundred meters to their home with her father (who was also burned).

Shortly thereafter, she was rushed to the ICU at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer where she was put into a medically induced coma. Doctors were sure she would not survive. When her story went viral, prayers for her recovery poured in from around the world.

One week later she woke up.

Two weeks later she left the ICU for the regular pediatric ward.

In March, she was able to give an interview to the magazine Otiot:

“We didn’t see anything before it happened. It was dark. I just saw a burning object flying towards us, and suddenly everything exploded. At the moment that the fire broke out, I knew what I needed to do in order to stay alive. I put my right hand into the flames in order to open my seat belt. I was on automatic pilot.”

Three nights ago in Ma’ale Shomron, Ayala stood in front of a large crowd who had come to help her celebrate her bat mitzvah and expressed her thanks for their prayers and those of so many others.

What is Ayala’s dream? To become a writer–and to that end she has already filled numerous notebooks with stories for children.

Israelstreet praises the courage and resilience of Ayala Shapira and wishes her the best in her continued rehabilitation!
