TODAY’S BLOG:
The only subject of conversation in Israel today has been a wedding video that was shown last night on Israel’s ultra-left wing Channel 10. The wedding apparently took place in recent weeks, months after the arson attack in Duma which resulted in the deaths of 3 of the Dawabshe family.
In the video, young teenage celebrants at the party can be seen on a small section of the dance floor dancing with guns and knives, and waving pictures of the dead Dawabshe family (mother, father, child). In particular, one dancer is using a knife to hold aloft and stab a picture of the child. (Click here to see the video—scroll down to the video which is near the middle of the page).
Let your humble servant begin at the beginning.
Just as we always roundly condemn Palestinians for dancing in the street and giving out candy each time an Israeli is murdered by terrorists so do we roundly condemn the “demonstration” that took place at the wedding. There is no moral justification for celebrating the death of the Palestinian family.
All day today, other wedding participants have condemned what took place, including the mother and father of the bride. That father stated today that if he had seen what was taking place, he would thrown out the group engaging in those activities. The groom has stated that those dancing with the pictures were wedding crashers–they came with no invitation.
Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau spoke for most Israelis and your humble servant this afternoon when he said this:
“Such acts are not the way of Judaism. It’s a rejection and repudiation of the values of the Jewish people, of the Jewish Torah, and of the uniqueness of the Jewish people. Parents and educators must take it upon themselves, along with law enforcement, to do everything possible to prevent such horrifying identification with acts of terror and appalling murder.”
Having said all of the above, your humble servant would like to conclude with the following three points:
1. The attempt of the Israeli “left” to tar everyone on the Israeli “right” because of the actions of a few at a wedding is despicable.
2. The appearance of the video at this particular moment is suspicious in the extreme.
It is amazing that at precisely the moment when demonstrations against the treatment of “suspects” in the Duma fire have erupted, this video suddenly has suddenly surfaced–with allegations that those dancing in the video are “friends” of those arrested by Israeli security services. It is an obvious attempt to justify the hideous treatment that those “suspects” have been receiving.
3. The timing of the video’s appearance also begs the question of who made the video, and how did it get into the hands of Channel 10? One suspects that it may have been made by an undercover Shin Bet agent and then turned over to Channel 10 by the agency.
Whatever the case, no video–no matter how reprehensible–can justify the denial of basic civil rights to those who have been arrested on the basis of nothing more than “suspicion of having committed a crime.”
