. . . BREAKING NEWS . . .
4:00 pm: IDF military prosecutor at detention hearing for soldier who killed the wounded terrorist in Hevron last Thursday states that the IDF will charge the soldier with manslaughter, not murder.
UPDATES 9 am Israel time:
–>Palestinian terror escalates.
Wednesday was another violent day here in Israel. Perhaps the worst instance occurred just before 7 pm last night when an Israeli mother who was driving home to Kiryat Arba was forced off the road by a terrorist driving a van. The car crashed, but no one was physically wounded. The terrorist escaped.
By one count, there were “at least” 47 “rock” and Molotov attacks yesterday. We always write “at least” because numerous attacks are not reported by residents of Judea and Samaria.
Here are 20 of the places where attacks occurred:
Ramla, Bethany, Hizma, Issawiya, Hader, Migdalot, Husan, A-Ram, Road 443, Homesh, Abu Dis, Rachel’s Tomb, Ofer, the Husan bypass road, Aidah, the Moskowitz House in Ras al-Amud, Hawara, Gilo, Route 60, Chumash, and Enid.
Regular readers of israelstreet undoubtedly recognize some of the above names because attacks happen there every day.
What are the most dangerous roads? Road 443, Highway 60, and the Husan Bypass Road leading to Beitar Illit.
A sadly fascinating article appeared on 0404 this morning in which a father who regularly drives his children to school along the Husan Bypass Road was interviewed. When he starts out in the morning, he puts his two daughters in the back seat, straps them in, then puts a helmet with a protective visor on their heads.
He commented:
“We have no other solution. Anyone who travels on the road is in a life-threatening situation. The defense establishment does not give us a solution, and there is no security on this road, then what is there left for us to do? We are defending ourselves. It’s a shame that this happens in the Land of Israel. Israel tells us that she has the best army in the world.”
–>So what is the IDF doing while these nonstop “rock” and Molotov attacks are occurring?
Do you remember the synagogue that was torched by Palestinian terrorists two months ago?
The synagogue was located in Karmi Tsur and had been built on a hill beside the community overlooking the place where the bodies of Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrah were found after they were murdered in 2014.
After the synagogue was partially burned and vandalized by Palestinian terrorists, PM Netanyahu made a grand display of condemning the arson and querying why the world was silent.
This morning, amazingly, the synagogue was razed to the ground by the IDF’s Civil Administration.
Yes, you read that correctly. IDF engineers and bulldozers destroyed the synagogue completely.
And why you may ask? Was the synagogue built on private Palestinian land?
No. The synagogue was destroyed because “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon determined that even though it was built on Karmi Tsur land, it did not have the necessary permits.
Can you believe this?
–>Some small good news amidst the bad.
The Local Planning and Building department of the municipality of Jerusalem approved the construction of 18 new housing units for Jewish families in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber.
Actually, the building already exists–having been built back in 2012. Yesterday’s decision primarily changes the use of the building from one housing private, Elad, security personnel to one housing families.
Elad is a nonprofit Israeli NGO that focuses its efforts on bringing Jews back to homes and land that were taken from them during the latter part of the British mandate and the period of Jordanian occupation (1948-1967).
TODAY’S BLOG:
First we had the absurd Messi affair earlier this week in which soccer player Lionel Messi was accused of being a Jew because he “insulted” Egyptians by agreeing to donate a pair of his playing shoes to be auctioned for Egyptian charity.
Yesterday it was Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme’s turn.
Van Damme, who is in Israel on a 5-day visit, is renowned worldwide as a macho-man action hero who always stands up to evil and beats down the bad guys.
Well, Jean-Claude wasn’t very macho yesterday.
It all started when he posted this innocuous picture on Facebook:
Van Damme captioned the picture: Shalom from Jerusalem, Israel!
In the hours that followed, Van Damme’s Facebook page was deluged with blistering criticism from Palestinians with comments like: “You are in Jerusalem the capital of Palestine, not Israel . . . Screw you!”
In short order Van Damme recaptioned the picture to read:
“Shalom from Jerusalem!”
Again he was deluged by comments such as: “You should say salaam from Palestine.”
In short order Van Damme recaptioned the picture to read:
“Hello from Jerusalem!!”
And so the matter ended. On the one hand, we want to conclude today’s blog by praising Van Damme for coming to Israel, donning an Israel hat at the Old City Wall and a kipa at the Kotel, and braving BDS criticism to do the above.
On the other hand, well, you can make your own judgments about Van Damme’s reaction to the Palestinian criticism, but take a good look at the force that Palestinians can marshal to intimidate people of good will like Van Damme.
This is the world we Israelis face everyday, a world in which we must fight for our very existence amidst a sea of delegitimizers.
