. . . Updates 8 am Israel time . . .
–>Palestinian terrorism yesterday . . .
*Israeli motorists were wounded in the morning on the Samarian Gilead and Huwara Roads by “rock” throwing terrorists. By noon, the IDF had closed the roads to Palestinian traffic.
Other “rock” attacks occurred at such places as Betar, Efrat, Karni Shomron, and Sharqiya.
*Molotov firebombs engulfed a military vehicle near A-Ram and were thrown at Israeli security personnel during riots at Makel, Issawiya, and Duma. Miraculously, no Israelis were wounded in these attacks.
–>Speaking of Duma and “fire” . . .
Dozens of Israeli protesters demonstrated at the entrance to the Palestinian settlement yesterday afternoon. The protesters were demanding that a commission of inquiry be established to ferret out the truth about all the arson there.
Back and forth arson attacks between the Dawabshe family and another Palestinian family have all the earmarks of clan warfare. Immediately after the fire last July, a number of people wondered if that fire was set by Palestinians in Duma.
They still wonder.
–>Good news from New York . . .
It appears that the abominable United Nations, in its “infinite” wisdom, has reversed course and will now allow a small exhibition on Zionism to be displayed in its entirety. Along with a display on Jerusalem and another about Israeli-Arabs, the Zionism display had been egregiously censored.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon issued this statement last night:
“Victory for Zionism! The pressure worked, and the U.N. reversed its decision to censor our exhibit about Zionism, and now the exhibition is available to everyone in the corridors of the parliament of nations. We continue to work to remove the censorship on two additional exhibitions on Jerusalem and Israeli Arabs.”
–>A few notes on the presidential campaign in the U.S. . . .
*In a mind-numbing display of the dispensing of fraudulent information yesterday in an interview in the New York Daily News, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders accused Israel of indiscriminately killing civilians in Gaza during the 2014 war with Hamas.
And how many civilians did Sanders say that we killed? “More than 10,000.”
Unbelievable.
Sanders could be a pr person for Hamas–but even Hamas only claimed that 2200 civilians were killed (in reality, the number was probably half that or fewer). As we all know, civilians died because Hamas used them as human shields or killed them.
*What are we to say about Donald Trump? Here is a man who has spent the entire campaign answering questions about Israel by saying that “how could I not support Israel when I have a daughter who is Jewish?” Of course, unfortunately, there is no connection between supporting Israel and being Jewish–especially among American Jews.
But this weekend, when he was supposed to be the honored sendak at his newest grandson’s brit milah, Trump chose to skip the ceremony and campaign in Wisconsin instead. It didn’t do him much good however, the latest vote tally has him losing by 14% points to Ted Cruz.
TODAY’S BLOG:
The story of “the Hevron soldier” continues to dominate the news here in Israel. Yesterday, a second hearing continued taking place to consider an appeal of the IDF prosecutors.
You will recall that last Friday, the military court rejected the prosecutor’s demand that the soldier remain locked up in a military jail, and instead ordered him released to “house arrest” on an open military base near Kibbutz Nahshonim. Infuriated, the prosecutorial team immediately filed an appeal, but the hearing for the appeal was scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
Yesterday, however, began with pathologically “unable to keep his mouth shut” “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon speaking to a group of students in the Jordan Valley:
“It is important for us to win and remain human beings. If we lose our morality, we lose our way. We must not act contrary to our values. I am very concerned about what has happened since the Hevron event took place. Who is backing this soldier is not backing the law and our values.
Stop for a moment and think about how outrageous Ya’alon’s statement was.
In the middle of a military hearing to determine the status of the soldier, Ya’alon had the unbridled audacity to try to predetermine the outcome by accusing everyone who is supporting the soldier of being immoral and not following the law.
Aside from throwing the soldier under the bus yet again, Ya’alon’s comments were even more outrageous because Ya’alon has not been in the courtroom, and therefore has not heard or seen any of the evidence firsthand. And that evidence, by all accounts, has been mostly favorable to the soldier’s version of events.
So much so, that the military judge yesterday took the extraordinary step of once again rejecting the IDF prosecutors’ arguments. He ruled that the soldier had every reason to believe that the wounded terrorist on the ground posed a threat, and that the soldier had not been given adequate training about what to do in such a bizarre situation (in which you have a wounded terrorist on the ground who has just stabbed a soldier, and who might be wearing an explosive vest toward which his hand appears to be moving).
In the end, the judge ordered the soldier returned to unfettered “house arrest.”
But that didn’t stop the prosecution from saying that it will seek a criminal indictment of the soldier next week.
One last observation–returning again to Ya’alon’s statement about all those supporting the soldier being guilty of not following the law and of being immoral. According to the last poll taken on the subject, 82% of the Israeli public support the soldier. They believe, as does your humble servant, that the soldier was following the law exactly and acting with the highest morality possible–namely, he was trying to protect human life.
