Because Israeli television and radio rarely report events like the above which occur in Judea, Samaria, and eastern Jerusalem, Netanyahu knows that he can get away with absurd statements like “Terrorism is on the decrease.”

One of a number of anti-Ya’alon flyers and posters that have appeared around Israel in the wake of Ya’alon’s endless attacks against the Hevron soldier. The captions read: we will target you politically–the Likud party will get rid of you in the primaries. While israelstreet agrees with the sentiment expressed, we disagree with the graphics.

As regular readers of israelstreet know, your humble servant is no fan of our “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon.

This attitude is a result of Ya’alon abject failure to protect communities in southern Israel during the last wars with Gaza, and his reprehensible efforts to attack Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

In the latter regard, his assault on the civil rights of Jewish youth has broken all moral bounds as he has ordered those youth arrested without charges, held for weeks and months without indictment, subjected to interrogations bordering on torture, and denied legal representation and family access. It has been a gross display of anti-democratic actions which make many of us wonder what kind of country Israel has become.

That is precisely why Ya’alon’s words sounded so hollow on Friday.

Attacking the Hevron soldier yet again, he quickly devolved into a defense of his indefensible actions:

“I will fight and I will continue to fight for the State of Israel’s sanity and morality . . . It’s not a matter of right and left – this is our future and our children. This is the question of what kind of country we aspire to live in: a country that is part of the family of nations, Jewish and democratic, modern and tolerant, or a descent into districts dangerous and destructive?”

Ya’alon as the great democratic, moral, crusader doesn’t ring true–mainly because he has descended into “districts dangerous and destructive.”

It is long past time for Ya’alon to be replaced as Defense Minister and to replace him with a person who supports human rights, supports our soldiers in the IDF, and administers the Defense Ministry with Jewish, democratic morality.
