UPDATES 6:00 PM Israel Time

…Palestinian terrorism so far today…

Among the attacks has been:

–a stabbing attack in Jerusalem in which a young man was stabbed in the chest while standing beside the Jerusalem Light Rail stop near Hanevim Street. He was taken to Sha’are Zedek Medical Center and is in “moderate” condition. The terrorist was eventually captured by Border Guards.

–a Molotov attack on the Kiryat Arba security fence which set the fence on fire.

–“rock” attacks on motorists at Har Gilo, Bethlehem, Mt. Hebron, and at other locations.

…Palestinian terrorism yesterday…

More than 40 Palestinian attacks took place from morning to night.

A stabbing attack was thwarted at Beitar Illit when a Palestinian terrorist armed with a knife was captured.

Terrorists opened fire on an IDF force near Qabatiya. No Israelis were wounded.

There were “rock” attacks at El Khader, Hatzor (motorist wounded), Rachel’s Tomb, Burin, Mt. Hebron, Beit El, Bethany, Bet Zeit, Elias, Al-Fawwar, the Lion’s Gate in Jerusalem, Anwar (a policeman was wounded), Azaria, Hebron Hills, Silwad, Abu Dis, Shechem, and at bus 160 near Beit Ummar (bus badly damaged). In many of these attacks men, women, and children were traumatized.

Palestinian Molotov throwers ignited a huge fire in Pisgat Ze’ev, and another fire in Mt. Hebron.

A Palestinian missile attack from Gaza failed when two missiles fired from central Gaza exploded on the Gaza side of the border fence.

…More illegal European Union construction taken down…

The Israeli Civil Administration was out in the E1 area near Ma’ale Adumim this morning taking apart 7 mobile homes and other unfinished construction that had been and was being built by the European Union.

The European Union is continually sneaking in trailers and throwing up prefab housing to try to establish "facts on the ground" in Area C of Israel.

The European Union is continually sneaking in trailers and throwing up prefab housing to try to establish “facts on the ground” in Area C of Israel. Here, workers are dismantling the “housing.”

As usual, there were no permits for the housing–housing which was designed for population transfer, the moving of Palestinians from Areas A and B to Area C.

…A new record is set…

The Israel Electric Company reports that a new “all-time” record for Israeli electricity consumption was set five days ago on May 11.

557 megawatts were used.

Today the temperatures were 47 C in the areas around Eilat with a record high of 47 C for the date at Yotvata.

If you think that this is hot, when your humble servant was in Eilat last year, the temperature reached 52 C (about 127 F).

TODAY’S BLOG:

Moshe Ya’alon was a highly decorated soldier who continuously defended Israel courageously and meritoriously. However, he is unfortunately a poster boy for the notion that excellent soldiers make lousy Defense Ministers.

In southern Israel where your humble servant resides, Ya’alon will always be remembered for his egregiously poor conduct of the war with Hamas back in 2014. Not only did Ya’alon, in conjunction with IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, send soldiers into battle ill-equipped causing more than a dozen to be killed, but also his and Netanyahu’s constant agreements to ceasefires caused another dozen to be killed by mortars as they waited in holding areas in and around Gaza.

And there was more.

Near the end of the war, the man who had been a courageous soldier became a shadow of himself refusing (again along with Gantz) to go to front line locations to lead the troops for fear of being targeted by Hamas missiles and mortars.

And all of this does not even address Ya’alon’s unending efforts to undermine Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, and his continual signing of detention orders against Jewish teenagers who are subsequently chucked into prison for months at a time with no legal representation and no access to families.

Since March, Ya’alon’s behavior has spiraled even further downward with increasing rapidity.

First, we have witnessed his unbelievable and incessant attacks on Elor Azariah, the Hevron soldier accused of manslaughter in the killing of a Palestinian terrorist. Ya’alon has done everything within his power to try to prejudice the military prosecution, the trial court, and the Israeli public against Azariah.

Ya’alon’s treatment of the Azariah case has been a nauseating display of unprofessional and unethical bias.

Second, we saw Ya’alon rush to the defense of the Deputy Chief of the IDF, Yair Golan who incredibly compared Israelis in Israel today with Nazis in Germany in the 1930s.

Third, in the wake of his defense of Golan, Ya’alon made yet another speech two days ago in which he encouraged IDF leaders to follow Golan’s example and speak “their conscience” to the media and in public forums about whatever troubles them. Everyone wants IDF leaders to speak their conscience, but for Ya’alon to suggest that they do so to the media and in other public forums was tantamount to suggesting that the IDF should be involved in politics–something that IDF has always studiously avoided.

Fourth and finally, we saw a vicious twitter attack a few days ago by one of Ya’alon’s trusted advisers. That attack focused on IDF soldier Roi Klein, who was killed in the last war with Hezbollah when he jumped on a grenade to save his soldiers. The adviser blasted Klein for leading his soldiers into a death trap. Ya’alon later apologized for the tweet, but there is little doubt where the idea for the tweet came from.

All of this begs the question of why Ya’alon remains in the government.

The answer is simple. It is politically expedient for Benjamin Netanyahu. The second Netanyahu dismisses Ya’alon, Ya’alon will move to another political party–and the Coalition may well collapse.

Nevertheless, as we have written on numerous occasions: Moshe Ya’alon should be summarily fired as Defense Minister.

In fact, he should never have been chosen for the job in the first place.
