UPDATES 7:00 pm Israel Time:
…Palestinian terror yesterday…
At 6:50 pm, a stabbing attack was thwarted when alert police and Border Guards spotted a man acting suspiciously at a bus stop in the Shuafat neighborhood of Jerusalem. When he boarded a bus headed for the Damascus Gate, he was taken into custody, searched, and arrested when a knife was found. The man subsequently admitted that he intended to carry out a stabbing attack.
Just after 8:00 pm, IEDs were thrown at Israeli soldiers at Rachel’s Tomb outside of Bethlehem.
“Rock” attacks took place in Hebron, Al-Fawwar, Malik, Makel, Bethany, Atarot, Ein Yabrud, Mt. Hebron, Beit Ummar, Aida, Silwan, Zeita, Shiloh, Beit El, Yakir, Hallamish, Ras Al-Amud, and Umm Safa among other places.
In the above attacks, three Israeli soldiers were wounded as were numerous Israeli civilians who suffered physical and traumatic wounds.
…Come live–for a long time–in Israel…
In some remarkable statistics released yesterday, the World Health Organization said that the average life expectancy of people in the world had increased by 5 years since the year 2000.
The WHO reported that in terms of life expectancy, Israelis now rank 6th in the world with an average life expectancy of 84.3 years for women, and 80.6 years for men.
…Consternation and panic reign supreme on the “Left”…
In the wake of yesterday’s dramatic political announcements, the V15 movement held an emergency meeting in Tel Aviv last night.
Of course Victory in 2015 (V15) should be discarded as a name because this group, that was partly funded by the U.S. State Department, was on the losing side in last year’s election (perhaps it should be called L15).
Anyway, the new mantra that the group decided to push is “Moderate majority wakes up.” Actually, the Israeli public woke up with regard to V15 and the “Left” in 2015.
…How the IDF General Command became “Leftist”…
It turns out that the IDF has for some time now been requiring that all candidates for senior officer positions in the IDF complete special courses. No one aspiring to the rank of Major or higher can progress without attending and completing these classes. Approximately 2000 would-be officers take the classes each year.
And what are some of the classes?
A large number are produced and taught by the Hartman Institute–an organization that receives part of its funding from the utterly leftist New Israel Fund.
What Hartman supposedly teaches are Jewish identity, morality, human dignity, purity of arms, and responsibility–all through a distinctly left-wing lens.
How left-wing a lens?
Here is a recent quote from Daniel Hartman, head of the Shalom Hartman Institute:
“I wish that our problem was just Netanyahu [who] lives in Germany in 1938. Our challenge is educational; we must treat [sick] patients whose roots are in [Israeli] society.”
If this sounds familiar it should. It is exactly the same idea expressed by Gen. Yair Golan a couple of weeks ago and by Defense Minister Ya’alon today (see below) and previously.
Perhaps incoming Defense Minister Lieberman will put an end to the rubbish being taught to our officers.
…One piece of great news…
With Moshe Ya’alon’s resignation from the Knesset this morning (see below) comes news that the 33rd person on the Likud list will now become a Knesset member.
And who is 33rd? None other than one of your humble servant’s most respected figures: Rabbi Yehuda Glick.
Maybe Glick will be able to affect some changes in government policy toward the Temple Mount–his special focus of interest.
TODAY’S BLOG:
One can hardly imagine a more sour case of sour grapes.
Barely a month ago, Moshe Ya’alon was a happy member of Likud and close protege of PM Netanyahu. He was extremely comfortable in his position of power as Defense Minister, ruling despotically over Judea and Samaria and controlling the command structure of the IDF.
Today he has resigned as Defense Minister and a member of the Knesset–essentially fired by Netanyahu, but in a larger sense forced out by Israeli public opinion. He could have chosen to leave on a high note, but true to his narcissistic, verbally out-of-control self, Ya’alon left by blasting Israel, PM Netanyahu, and Likud–and in the process providing fodder to Israel bashers everywhere.
And this was all after he was offered the post of Foreign Minister–and refused.
After he had resigned this morning, Ya’alon took the podium at a press conference he called in Tel Aviv at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense.
He began by virtually announcing that he will run for political office at the earliest opportunity:
“I am taking a break, but I do not intend to leave political and public life.”
[What we can expect is that Ya’alon will now embark on a worldwide public speaking tour in which he bashes Israel at every venue. He will be the darling of “leftists” everywhere.]
He continued with by patting himself on the back:
“In all my actions and decisions, I saw before my eyes the security of the state and its good above every other consideration.”
[Sure thing Boogie. What you saw, and still see before your eyes is the Prime Ministership.]
He then devolved into a series of attacks. First he went after Netanyahu:
“I found myself in difficult political arguments with the prime minister over core values.”
[Ya’alon’s arguments were not merely political ones nor were they only with the Prime Minister. By the time this past weekend ended, Ya’alon found himself at odds with most Israelis].
Then he went after both Netanyahu and members of his Cabinet:
“Regrettably, there are senior politicians in our country who have chosen to incite and split up sections of Israeli society from one another, instead of unifying and connecting them. I find it unacceptable that we be divided due to cynicism and a lust for power, and I have repeatedly voiced my opinion on the matter out of honest concern for the future of both the current generation in Israel and the ones that will follow. Those who lead us must do so based on ethics, an inner compass and at times against an opposing gale-force wind. They should work to outline a path, and not get blown off course for electoral reasons or in light of public surveys, nor should they conduct or agree to any reckless and irresponsible discourse.”
[An unbelievable diatribe.
In the first place, we have Ya’alon parroting the Herzog-Livni-Obama canard about Netanyahu inciting and splitting up sections of Israeli society.
In the second place, he condemns others for a “lust for power” at the precise moment that he has had his own lust for power cut short.
In the third place, his “concern for the future of the both the current generation in Israel and the ones that will follow” is as hollow as his blather about “ethics and an inner compass.”
Here is a Defense Minister who may go down in Israeli history as the most egregious violator of civil rights ever–a man who denied the most basic civil rights to tens of Israeli teenagers by arresting them without charges, interrogating (many would say “torturing”) them without legal representation, and denying them even the most basic access to family.
Just think about Meir Ettinger, whom Ya’alon had arrested and imprisoned nine months ago–and who has been held in solitary confinement ever since. With Ya’alon gone, Ettinger will finally be released in about a week.
And what about Elor Azariah, the Hevron soldier? Will anyone ever forget how Ya’alon immediately convicted him in the press and has continued to do so on an almost daily basis? What Ya’alon has done is to try and deny Azariah a fair trial by prejudicing the military prosecution and trial court. What about Azariah’s civil rights?]
Ya’alon then attacked Likud:
“Fundamentalist influences have taken over Likud. This is not the same Likud that I joined. A spirit of fracturing is ruling the movement.”
[Isn’t it amazing how Ya’alon characterizes anyone who disagrees with him as “fundamentalist”? If a nationalistic love of Israel is all that it takes to be called a “fundamentalist”, then you can call your humble servant a fundamentalist too.]
He then attacked Israeli society while praising himself again:
“I fought with all my strength against the phenomena of extremism, violence and racism in Israeli society that threatens our might and also permeates the IDF, and has already damaged it.”
[Extremism, violence, and racism that permeates Israeli society and the IDF? Is it any wonder that Ya’alon defended Gen. Yair Golan’s Holocaust comments about Israeli society being like Nazi society in the 1930s?]
And concluded the way he began by declaring:
“In the future I will return to contend for Israel’s national leadership.”
He may run, but if current polls are any indication, Ya’alon’s candidacy will go nowhere.
All in all, it was an inglorious and unseemly way for Ya’alon to announce his resignation. Thank goodness he has been removed from office.
