UPDATES 6 pm Israel time
…Palestinian terror so far today…
A major security scare has played out over the last few hours. The Trans-Samaria highway was completely closed down for hours after two terrorists ran their car through a checkpoint and then fled the car.
Police sappers have been on the scene trying to determine if the car, which remains on the road, is booby-trapped.
Meanwhile one of the terrorists escaped and the other was captured.
…Palestinian terror yesterday…
More than 30 terror incidents took place throughout the day including a Molotov attack against police in East Talpiot and motorists in Al-Fawwar, and a pipe bomb thrown at security forces in Abu Dis.
Palestinian terrorists threw “rocks” at Israeli men, women, and children at Shuafat, the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hevron, Zeita, Al-Khader, Duma, Kiryat Arba, Gush Etzion, A-Ram, Issawiya, Beth Horon, the Jerusalem tunnels, Silwan, Mt. Hebron, Hawara, and Qalandiya and at least 20 other places.
…The last act of Moshe Ya’alon…
“Security forces” showed up in the Mishkenot community in the middle of the night last night and destroyed a house, tents, and anything else they could get their hands on. They even seized one family’s electrical appliances and furniture.
…And just after the buildings in Mishkenot were destroyed…
The Israel Supreme Court rejected a petition brought by the Jerusalem Forum against the European Union and Israel Civil Administration to force the demolition of 15 illegal structures built by the EU for Palestinians in the E1 area near Kfar Adumim.
The petition noted that the buildings were constructed by the European Union in December 2015, and that demolitions ordered months ago are not being carried out.
In an incredibly dangerous decision, the judges on the Court suggested that the European Union might enjoy immunity from Court actions in Israel.
Unbelievable.
…Who would have believed it?…
The Swiss government announced today that it will investigate whether “humanitarian aid” given by the government to numerous organizations is actually being used for anti-Israel activities.
Switzerland is the first European country to ever undertake such an examination, and all the kudos should go to NGO Monitor for going to Switzerland and meeting with Swiss officials.
…How far afield is Hezbollah?…
We know that the terrorist group Hezbollah is rapidly losing “soldiers” in Syria–but we often forget that Hezbollah is fighting alongside Iraqi-Iranian-American forces in Iraq.
And also losing men.
Yesterday, Tahsin Al-Saadi, Hezbollah’s chief media officer was killed in Fallujah during a live broadcast on Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television.
TODAY’S BLOG:
The big news in Israel today is that the Yisrael Beiteinu party of Avigdor Lieberman has joined the government. Lieberman will be sworn in as Israel’s new Defense Minister next week.
In addition, Yisrael Beiteinu was given the posts of Immigration Minister, Deputy Knesset Speaker, and membership on the Economics Committee, Ministerial Committee for Legislation, Social-Economic Cabinet, and Committee on Symbols and Ceremonies.
In Israel, a party joining a coalition is not a simple matter of saying “We join.” There are issues to be negotiated and a document to be signed.
In this case, the document is interesting. Here are some of the details:
1. Between 2016 and 2020, 1.4 billion shekels will be allocated to pension reform, and 150 million shekels will go to public housing.
2. The government will amend “sentencing” instructions to IDF military courts. In the future, they will be allowed to hand down death sentences to terrorists convicted of murder by a majority of 2 votes, instead of a unanimous vote of all 3 judges (military courts have 3 judges).
3. Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu agreed not to join any other coalition government in the current Knesset without the agreement of the other party.
4. Importantly, Yisrael Beiteinu agreed to support a proposed amendment to the Basic Law which would prevent the Israel Supreme Court from striking down a law unless a majority of eight justices (out of 15) vote to do so.
What does all of this mean?
Your humble servant believes that increased pension and housing subsidies will help those on or near the bottom of the economic ladder.
Requiring 2 instead of 3 judges to impose a death penalty is meaningless–the Supreme Court will intervene immediately in any death penalty case and commute any such sentence.
The coalition agreement is only meant to ensure current coalition stability for the next three years.
As for the amendment to the Basic Law, anything that limits the out-of-control power of the Israel Supreme Court is a good thing.
