UPDATES 6 pm Israel time
…Palestinian terror so far today (Tuesday)…
*An IDF naval force opened fire this morning on two Palestinian smuggling vessels off the coast of Gaza. One terrorist was wounded.
…Palestinian terror yesterday (Monday)…
There were more than 20 terror attacks including the stabbing of an IDF soldier on Yigal Alon Street in Tel Aviv (the soldier remains in “moderate” condition with screwdriver stab wounds; the terrorist from Shechem was captured); Molotov firebombs (an attack set fire to the area around Yitzhar); and “rocks” (at places like Hawara where motorists were traumatized and cars damaged).
…The trial of the Hevron soldier continues…
In the surprising event of the day, Lt. Col. Ronen Shor ordered the prosecution to turn over possibly exculpatory evidence to the defense team.
Needless to say, the prosecution objected to the turnover. After all, the prosecution is intent on railroading the soldier for a “crime” he did not commit.
…An anniversary of sorts…
Today is the sixth anniversary of the Mavi Marmara incident which occurred in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Gaza. As you may recall, 10 Israeli soldiers were wounded when Turkish IHH terrorists attacked them after they legally boarded the Turkish ship–a ship which had been organized under the eye of Turkish President Erdogan.
Nine of the Turkish terrorists were killed by Israeli soldiers acting in self-defense.
For the last six years, Israel has made a number of disgusting concessions to the Turks, not the least of which was PM Netanyahu’s “apology call” to Erdogan on the tarmac of Ben Gurion airport on March 22, 2013–an “apology call” forced down Netanyahu’s throat by Barack Obama as he was leaving Israel.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Do you remember PM Netanyahu’s speech at Bar Ilan University back in 2009?
It was a speech that nobody in the international community actually listened to. All they heard was Netanyahu expressing support for a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
No one heard him say that his support was dependent on the international situation, the Palestinians recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, complete Palestinian demilitarization, and Jerusalem remaining the united capital of Israel (you can read a more extensive analysis in an israelstreet blog in March of last year).
Your humble servant mentions this speech because something very similar happened yesterday.
Following the Knesset’s approval of Avigdor Lieberman as Defense Minister, Netanyahu said, “I will take this opportunity to make it clear that I remain committed to making peace with the Palestinians and with all our neighbors. The Arab Peace Initiative includes positive elements that can help revive constructive negotiations with Palestinians. We are willing to negotiate with Arab states’ revisions to that initiative so that it reflects the dramatic changes in the region since 2002, but maintains the agreed goal of two states for two peoples. To this end, we welcome the recent speech by Egyptian President [Abdel-Fattah] el-Sissi and his offer to help advance peace and security in the region.”
Immediately thereafter, the usual cast of internationalists applauded Netanyahu’s embrace of the so-called “Arab Peace Initiative.”
On the face of it, Netanyahu’s statement does express support for the Arab initiative, the one put forward by Saudi Arabia back in 2002. In that context, it also expresses support for the “the goal of two states for two peoples.”
But read the statement carefully.
“The Arab peace initiative includes positive elements . . .” [In other words, there are some positive elements and some negative elements].
“We are willing to negotiate with Arab states’ revisions to that initiative . . .” [In other words, if the Arab states revise that initiative, Israel is willing to negotiate].
So what are the revisions that Netanyahu is referring to?
Let’s recall what the Arab Peace Initiative calls for (read a more extensive analysis of this in a previous israelstreet blog: A Blueprint for National Suicide, April 8 2013).
In return for the Arab nations’ recognition of Israel, the Arabs demand:
1. A complete Israeli withdrawal from every inch of territory “occupied” by Israel including “East Jerusalem” and the Old City of Jerusalem with its Western Wall and the Temple Mount–the holiest place in Judaism. It also includes a withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
2. A “just settlement” of the so-called “Palestinian refugee crisis” based on United Nations Resolution 194. According to the Arabs, this Resolution demands that every Palestinian “refugee” (the 5,000,000+ so-defined by the PLO and UNRWA) be allowed to return and live in Israel.
3. Based on numbers 1 and 2 above, the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state in the territories “occupied” since June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital.
So what is the likelihood of any of the above 3 demands being revised by the Arabs or conceded to by PM Netanyahu?
Less than zero.
But that won’t stop the likes of Tony Blair, John Kerry, and others from proclaiming that PM Netanyahu has embraced the Arab Peace Initiative as a blueprint for peace.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
