Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours
*A Palestinian terrorist armed with a knife was captured in the Old City of Jerusalem about an hour ago. She told police that she had come to the Old City to kill Jews.
*A Palestinian terrorist armed with a knife was captured just outside the Old City of Jerusalem earlier this afternoon.
*A Palestinian terrorist broke into a house in Efrat yesterday (Friday) evening and stabbed a 50 year old Israeli man. This morning, the man remains hospitalized in “serious” condition; the terrorist escaped.
TODAY’S BLOG
Is Israel a man or a mouse?
Gil: “Are you a man or a mouse?”
Dr. Hackenbush (Groucho Marx): “You put a piece of cheese down there and you’ll find out.”
From “A Day at the Races” (1937)
In the wake of yesterday’s nauseating vote condemning Israel in the United Nations’ Security Council, the time has come for Israel to decide if it is a man or a mouse.
Will Israel continue to meekly try to curry international favor about Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria by being politically correct, or will Israel boldly stand up, annex Area C of Judea and Samaria, and tell the international community where they stick their U.N. resolutions?
We could devote paragraphs in this blog today about the collusion that took place between New Zealand (which finally offered the resolution), the United States, Malaysia, and Venezuela, but what would be the point?
Except to say: the Malaysian Ambassador let the cat out of the bag during his speech when he said (my paraphrase): “We regret the lack of transparency in the production of this resolution, but we realized that time is of the essence.”
Why was time of the essence? Because President Obama and John Kerry had covertly told everyone that the Americans would abstain on the resolution–and that the Security Council had better hurry because President Obama will be President no more as of January 21. Apparently the plan for the anti-Israel resolution was hatched in a Kerry meeting with New Zealand government representatives in Wellington just over three weeks ago.
As we wrote in the last few israelstreet blogs, Resolution 2334 was completely predictable. Did Obama withhold the veto out of some animus against PM Netanyahu? Perhaps somewhat, but it is worthwhile remembering that Obama’s animus against Israel predates Obama’s animus against Netanyahu. That is why your humble servant and his wife campaigned so hard against him in 2008.

We knew what would happen in the end. We knew that Israel would be thrown under the bus.
I must add that your humble servant found it revolting yesterday to hear people express their disgust for the Obama action–after they voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012.
But back to the subject. What will Israel do now?
Probably nothing until President-elect Trump takes office, but I would respectively declare “Why wait?”
Tomorrow morning, members of the Israel lobby, led by Bezalel Smotrich will submit to a Knesset committee legislation that would annex Ma’ale Adumim to Israel.
There is no reason for this proposal not to be approved. Israel will be roundly condemned, but so what–it already is.
Is Israel a man or a mouse?
Addendum:
U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power’s speech to the Security Council yesterday was especially abominable. Her point was that the Obama Administration had been victimized by an Israeli government not interested in peace–and therefore the U.S. had no choice but to abstain. Nowhere did she mention that the Palestinians have never recognized “the Jewish State of Israel”, have turned down numerous offers of peace, and have murdered thousands of Israelis while claiming to be engaged in a peace process.
Power’s performance was also completely predictable. Your humble servant wrote this on June 5, 2013:
“It has been reported today that U.S. President Obama will appoint Samantha Power as the new American Ambassador to the United Nations. Power will replace Susan Rice who is taking the role of National Security Advisor formerly held by Tom Donilon.
Many of us Israelis particularly remember Powers’ interview back in 2002 at Berkeley in which her remarkably anti-Israel views were laid bare for all to hear . . . Suffice it to say that Powers’ appointment is nothing short of a disaster for Israel.”
