The Disingenuous Quote of the Day
“From time to time, statements are made [that] soldiers who are in a life-threatening situation are apparently afraid to shoot without first consulting an attorney. These statements are not serious and have no basis in reality. A soldier who is in mortal danger and who acts to defend himself or whoever is responsible for his defense is entitled to full support.”
Military Advocate General, Major General Sharon Afek, speaking at a conference of the Israel Bar Association
This statement from Afek could not be any more absurd. Every IDF soldier, whether active duty or reserve, is now afraid to shoot in any situation. Afek’s office has made it clear time and again through its aggressive prosecutions against our soldiers that they have no right to defend themselves.
Whether a soldier is serving in Judea and Samaria, on the Gaza Border, or elsewhere, he or she knows that Afek’s Military Advocate Office will go to every extreme to find soldiers guilty for firing their weapons–even to the point of asking left-wing “human rights” organizations to go into Palestinian communities to seek out (and reward) those who will bring a case against or testify against Israeli soldiers.
The News On The Israeli Street
Palestinian terror in the last 24 hours . . .
In Judea and Samaria:
Palestinian terrorists using Molotovs and “rocks” attacked Israelis at Deir Nizam, Al-Aruv, Beit Anun, Kiryat Arba, Al-Khader, on the Tunnels Road, Tekoa, the Hatti Junction, and at a host of other locations.
Palestinian terrorists attempted to burn down the security perimeter fence at New Givon.
On the Gaza border:
Palestinian terrorists continue launching explosive “balloons” out of Gaza, and those balloons continue exploding in southern Israel and starting fires.
Here is a photo from two hours ago in the Be’eri Forest where firefighters were attempting to stop the spread of a fire into a stand of trees:
Good news on the employment front . . .
The unemployment rate continues to decline. It is now down to 3.3% for the age group between 25 and 64. Overall, the number of employed Israelis has reached 3.97 million with 80.6% of Israelis in the above age group employed.
TODAY’S BLOG:
Will There Be A Coalition Or Not?
The news seems to change minute by minute; almost certainly it will have changed again by the time you have read this.
There is a full-court press on Avigdor Lieberman to get him sign on to an agreement about the proposed “draft law.”
To pressure Lieberman:
*PM Netanyahu and Moshe Kahlon have agreed that their respective parties of Likud and Kulanu will merge in case there is a new election. This leaves Lieberman further out on a limb because Kahlon had made noises supporting Lieberman.
*The Knesset passed the first reading to dissolve itself yesterday. Two more readings must be passed in order for the Knesset to disband.
*The Likud party in conjunction with PM Netanyahu has set dates for a new election–either the last week in August or at some point during the first three weeks in September.
*Lieberman’s closest confidant has been flown in from New York to mediate discussions.
To watch all of this play out on Israeli television and in the media, it is obvious that Lieberman is delighting in all the attention he is getting and in being a thorn in the side of PM Netanyahu.
Whether he will finally climb down out of his tree and sign a Coalition agreement in these last 30 hours before the deadline is anyone’s guess–but given all that he has been offered, he would be a fool not to.
Stay tuned for further details.
