The Sad Picture of the Day

IDF soldiers closing the Gate to the Island of Peace at Naharayim yesterday for the last time. All Israeli traffic to this once-symbol of peace between Jordan and Israel is now forbidden.

It was a peace that has never really materialized as evidenced by the fact that the bi-national project that was supposed to have been built there never was. From the outset, Jordan has used the so-called “peace” agreement to make endless demands on Israel.

The Quote of the Day:

“Lieberman is playing poker with no cards. It seems Gantz has 3 options: new elections, unity with Netanyahu, or a thin ruling coalition with the Arab parties and Lieberman. The third option seems the most realistic, however this split government will not last long. It will end with new elections quickly, and Lieberman will pay a heavy price.”

An unnamed Likud member speaking yesterday

What the Likud member was speaking in reference to was Lieberman’s latest salvo over the weekend in which he said he would join forces with whichever party compromises.

According to Lieberman, Netanyahu would have to dump the ultra-orthodox parties in order for Lieberman to join a Netanyahu coalition.

Conversely, Lieberman said that Gantz would have to agree to the Rivlin outline which states that Netanyahu would serve as prime minister first in a rotation with Gantz in order for Lieberman to join a Gantz coalition.

In short, Lieberman said nothing new.

Island of Peace update . . .

It appears that a last-minute negotiation has resulted in the memorial to the seven girls murdered by the Jordanian soldiers at Naharayim being left in Israeli hands.

We say “appears” because no notice of this has been made publicly.

Jordanian FM Ayman Safadi is scheduled to give a press conference at the Island of Peace on Monday in which rants about the “heroic recovery” of the tiny parcel of farmland.

Leviathan Finally Comes On Line

The Leviathan site off the coast of Israel.

The Leviathan site off the coast of Israel.

How often have we heard over the last few years how the huge Leviathan offshore natural gas field will solve many of Israel’s energy problems?

Word comes today from Energy Minister Yuval Steinetz that work on the Leviathan platform and pipeline to the coast is now 97% complete, and Leviathan gas will begin flowing to mainland Israel in December.

Leviathan and Tamar are expected to reshape energy consumption in Israel.

Leviathan and Tamar are expected to reshape energy consumption in Israel.

Lest we forget (to quote Wikipedia), “Leviathan is located in the Mediterranean, 47 kilometres (29 mi) south-west of the Tamar gas field. The gas field is located roughly 130 kilometres (81 mi) west of Haifa in waters 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) deep in the Levantine basin.”

It contains about 22 trillion cu ft of natural gas.

All your humble servant can say is “the sooner the better.”
