The Quote of the Day
“The Supreme Court has no authority to discuss the validity of Basic Laws because Basic Laws enacted by the Knesset are the highest constitutional norm in the country and the most fundamental expression of the principle of rule of law.”
PM Netanyahu commenting on the extraordinary hearing at the Supreme Court right now when for the first time in Israeli history the Court is trying to arrogate to itself the power to invalidate a Basic Law.
The Court action to hear a petition against the Nationality Law–which was made as a Basic Law–was extraordinary but unsurprising. As we have often written, the Supreme Court and its counterpart High Court of Justice feel that they wield absolute power.
The News on the Israeli Street
The daily Corona (Covid-19) update . . .
Here are the numbers over the last 24 hours (from 8 am Monday until 8 am today (Tuesday):
378,259 Israelis have been confirmed with the virus since the pandemic began last March.
There are 3,499 newly confirmed cases.
463 are in critical condition—an increase of 8
115 of the most critically ill are on ventilators—a decrease of 1
3,111 have died–an increase of 11
There are currently 26,275 active Corona cases in Israel.
Newly confirmed cases have topped 3000 a day; the critically ill are inching upwards toward 500: the end result of which is that hospitals will almost certainly begin experiencing a bed shortage in the near future–as of this morning 857 Corona patients are hospitalized.
A follow up to yesterday’s blog . . .
The murderer of Esther Horgan has yet to be found. Yesterday, a friend of Esther’s posted this on Facebook:
A mother of six, an artist, and a woman “full of kindness”. What do you think the reactions on Facebook were to the post?
1,327 people appreciated the post; 2,516 expressed tearful sympathy; and 1,606 thought it was hilarious that Horgan was murdered.
Who were the 1,606 laughers? All Arabs.
And people in the international community wonder why Israelis realize there will never be peace with the Palestinians.

Disaster in Judea and Samaria . . .
In yet another tragic event in Samaria yesterday, a young 19-year-old member of the Hilltop Youth was killed in a car crash.
Not just any car crash.
Apparently, police observed the occupants of a moving car with Israeli license plates throw a rock at a passing vehicle with Palestinian license plates.
The police decided to pursue the Israeli car which developed into a full-blown high speed chase. At some point, the driver of the car being pursued lost control and in the ensuing crash the young man was killed.
Your humble servant does not defend the person who threw the rock nor do I condone trying to flee from the police, but when one thinks that a life was lost because of one rock being thrown–in the context of dozens of Palestinian “rock” attacks on Israelis everyday–the entire incident was tragically absurd.
Was it really necessary for the police to pursue car given the fact they already undoubtedly had its license plate number?
Interestingly, another incident happened shortly afterward when Knesset legislator Bezalel Smotrich tried to reach the scene of the crash–and police physically grabbed him and tried to stop him from getting there (Knesset legislators are supposed to have immunity from such treatment).
The obvious question is “what were the police trying to hide?”
Yawn . . . will the Knesset dissolve itself tonight? . . .
Most Israelis are now to the point of who cares as one petty politician after another marches to the microphone to condemn someone other than themselves for the current budget debacle.
It still seem unlikely to your humble servant that a new election will take place in March, but who knows . . . and like I just wrote . . . who cares?
TODAY’S BLOG
Peace With The Palestinians?
One Terrorist Attack After Another
The truth is that Israel is beset with numerous Palestinian terror attacks everyday. Whether we are talking about “rock” and Molotov attacks in Judea and Samaria, or missile, balloon, and infiltration terror attacks along the Gaza border, Israelis rarely have a moment of peace.
Two days ago, we had the horrific murder of Esther Horgan.
Last night it was the attempted murder of a Border Policeman at the Lion’s Gate.
What happened this time has happened before. A terrorist showed up to the Gate with a machine gun and opened fire on the Border Policemen stationed there. One policeman was wounded–badly enough to be later hospitalized.
The miracle of last night was that the machine gun jammed. This gave other Border Policemen time to return fire–killing the terrorist.

Peace with the Palestinians?
You tell me, dear reader.
