The Iranians Demand The Moon: Will Biden Give It To Them?
As we all know, President Joe Biden has a vested interest (since he was Obama’s vice president) in seeing the Iranian Nuclear Weapons Appeasement Agreement–JCPOA– get restarted.
More than that, Biden is almost certainly under a lot of pressure from former President Obama who wants to cement his legacy, and from former Secretary of State John Kerry (now in Biden’s Cabinet) who wants to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for his part in the “negotiations” back in 2014-5.
On the other hand, the past four years have seen President Trump and the Gulf States change the landscape. The sanctions that President Trump imposed have hit Tehran hard, and all the Gulf can see how the Iranian proxy Houthis in Yemen are attacking Saudi Arabia on an almost daily basis.
To further complicate Biden’s planned rapprochement, we have multiple sources in Arab media reporting today that Iran has just handed Biden’s negotiating team a list of seven conditions necessary for them to come back to the table:
1. All sanctions have to be removed; Iran will not accept partial sanctions removal.
2. Iran demands financial compensation for the financial losses it suffered as a result of the U.S. exit from the Agreement.
3. There will be no discussion of Iran’s ballistic missile program.
4. No new country will be allowed to join the P5+1 group.
5. There will be no discussion of Iran’s involvement in regional affairs in the context of the Nuclear Agreement.
6. Any discussion of regional weaponry must be under the auspices of the United Nations.
7. Iran will not allow a 2-state solution for Israel and Palestine. It demands a referendum voted on by residents of the “territory.”
Leaving aside the sheer hubris in Iran demanding number 7, Biden will face extraordinary flak in the U.S. over Condition 2, and from Israel over Conditions 1 and 3. The fact that ballistic missiles were not even included in the original Agreement has long been seen as one of its major shortcomings–and now that Iran has spent 4 years creating bigger and better missiles, everyone sees the danger.
In short, even though Biden would rather be focusing on the Corona epidemic in the U.S., how he handles Iran may end up defining his presidency.
