Obama: “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.”

ISRAELSTREET endorses NAFTALI BENNETT for Prime Minister

Head of “HaBayit HaYehudi” (The Jewish Home) political party

“We can’t have peace with the Palestinians. Enough. How long can we talk about this? We can only reach coexistence . . .”

UPDATES 6 pm Israel time Wednesday:

**In the wake of the latest shooting on the Gaza Border two days ago in which IDF soldiers shot and killed a Hamas terrorist attempting to cut through the fence, Hamas has declared this morning that it will retaliate against Israeli “violations” of the ceasefire–and will liberate “Palestine.”

**Your humble servant continues to be at a loss as to why Israeli security forces do not act to beef up security at Rachel’s Tomb and along the dangerous roads of Judea and Samaria. In the last few hours at the Tomb, IDF soldiers have been attacked with Molotov cocktails and worshipers have been pelted with “rocks”; motorists (including a child passenger) have been wounded by “rocks” near Tekoa.

TODAY’S BLOG:

At the outset of President Obama’s first term in office back in 2009, the new president made a crass attempt to isolate Israel and undermine Benjamin Netanyahu over the issue of  “the settlements”. In this attempt, the Obama Administration worked closely with certain American journalists, the left wing Israeli media, and with three Israeli politicians: Tzipi Livni, Ehud Barak, and Ehud Olmert.

The arrogant Obama even went so far back in 2009 to brazenly tell the PLO and Mahmoud Abbas that it was not necessary to negotiate with Israel because the Netanyahu government would soon fall and be replaced by Tzipi Livni and her cohorts.

Of course all that Obama accomplished was the strengthening of Netanyahu in Israeli politics, and for the last year and a half, Obama has tempered his criticism.

But now Obama has been elected again, and another Israeli election is upon us. The last 24 hours in Israel have featured little in the news except President Obama’s disparaging remarks about Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, reported in a Bloomberg View column written by Jeffrey Goldberg.

Here is what Goldberg reports about Obama’s reaction to the Israeli decision to build in the E1 area last month (emphasis mine):

“When informed about the Israeli decision, Obama, who has a famously contentious relationship with the prime minister, didn’t even bother getting angry. He told several people that this sort of behavior on Netanyahu’s part is what he has come to expect, and he suggested that he has become inured to what he sees as self-defeating policies of his Israeli counterpart.

In the weeks after the UN vote, Obama said privately and repeatedly, “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.” With each new settlement announcement, in Obama’s view, Netanyahu is moving his country down a path toward near-total isolation.

And if Israel, a small state in an inhospitable region, becomes more of a pariah — one that alienates even the affections of the U.S., its last steadfast friend — it won’t survive. Iran poses a short-term threat to Israel’s survival; Israel’s own behavior poses a long-term one.”

The sheer, overweening, patronizing, demeaning hubris of Obama is breathtaking.  “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are?”

And for Obama to lay Israel’s “near-total isolation” at Netanyahu’s door after years of Obama attempting to isolate Israel is so scurrilous as to defy description.

But Obama’s thoughts that Israel may not “survive” and that Israel’s “own behavior” is as threatening if not more so than Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons speak volumes about just how dangerous Obama is for Israel .

Of course, the Israeli media has “picked up” Goldberg’s Obama comments and has been reporting them on every news show (laughably, the Israeli reportage is seeking to blame Obama’s comments on the fact that Netanyahu seemed to show favoritism toward Romney in the recent American election).

“Coincidentally” Tzipi Livni announced yesterday that she would be announcing a “major” new peace initiative with the Palestinians in the next few days.

Obama-Goldberg-Israeli media-Livni: the same pattern repeats itself over and over.

As if anyone cares except in reverse.

Readers of this blog know that your humble servant has no great love for Netanyahu, but with every criticism, Obama strengthens the prime minister. And as for Livni, if her declining poll numbers can be believed, she now stands to win only 6 or 7 seats in the coming Knesset.

The simple fact is that Israelis know exactly what their own best interests are. Responding to Obama’s criticism this morning, Netanyahu had this to say: “Everyone understands that only Israeli citizens will decide the true representative of Israel’s interests.”
