TODAY’S BLOG:

Today we have had yet another Israeli politician making an unseemly pilgrimage to Ramallah to embrace Mahmoud Abbas. Shelly Yachimovich, the head of Israel’s Labor Party, was intent on declaring to the world that she supports the peace process and letting Netanyahu to know that if he encounters trouble in trying to get his own coalition to stomach a possible “peace” deal, Labor stands ready to back him up.

Yachimovich’s worshiping at the feet of Abbas coincided with the decision last night of the PLO/Fatah Central Council  to accept the Arab League’s peace proposal which is being so highly touted by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.  Readers of israelstreet realize that this proposal would flood Israel with some 5 million self-proclaimed Palestinian “refugees” and divide Jerusalem by handing over the Old City and the Temple Mount to the Palestinians.

But yesterday, the PLO was only focusing on the “land swaps” idea. The Central Council declared its acceptance of the land swaps . . . well, sort of. The decision of the Council was that “minor swaps” are acceptable. But not land swaps that would include the major Jewish communities living in Judea and Samaria: “Settlements in all the Palestinian lands are illegal. There can be no land swaps without an Israeli recognition of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.”

Abbas’ minions went on to declare that no peace peace process can succeed “without a clear Israeli recognition of the two-state solution on the basis of the 1967 borders, a freeze of settlement construction and the release of prisoners, especially those who were arrested before 1994.”  Of course, even these preconditions are a canard; what the Palestinians really want is Israel.

What everyone seems to ignore in this faux peace process is that Mahmoud Abbas represents no one.  When Israel organized elections back in January 2005, Abbas was elected–ostensibly representing the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza–ostensibly, because Hamas boycotted the elections. His term of office was supposed to end on January 9, 2009. However, when that date rolled around, Abbas simply decided to unilaterally extend his term of office by one year. When the second deadline came, he didn’t even bother to extend his term.

Abbas is ruling by autocratic dictate.

In the meantime, Hamas set up its own government in Gaza and kicked Abbas and the PLO out.  If there were an election in Judea and Samaria tomorrow, who knows who would win?

But that doesn’t stop the world and the Israeli “left” from beating a path to Abbas’ door. After all, they are desperate to provide Abbas as much legitimacy as they can.
