*The Egyptians declared yesterday that after vanquishing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt that they are now going to actively try to undermine Hamas in Gaza.

In the words of a senior Egyptian security official:  “Gaza is next. We cannot get liberated from the terrorism of the Brotherhood in Egypt without ending it in Gaza, which lies on our borders.”

Isn’t it outrageous that the Egyptians fully understand the Hamas threat while Israel continuously and ridiculously attempts to prop up Hamas–and has even taken to praising Hamas for trying to restrain rocket fire on southern Israel (this “restraint” led to “only” 7 rockets being fired yesterday).

*Mahmoud Abbas, Israel’s supposed “partner for peace”, declared once again yesterday in a speech in Ramallah prior to attending yet another Conference of Foreign Ministers of the Arab League that:

—the Palestinians will never recognize a Jewish state of Israel.

—the Palestinians will never agree to an Israeli presence in the Jordan Valley.

—the Palestinians will never reach an agreement that does not include Jerusalem as the capital of “Palestine.”

—the Palestinians will never reach an agreement that does not recognize the Palestinian right of return to Israel.

Telling it like it is: Israel Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon (picture: forward.com).

In light of the above comments of Mahmoud Abbas, the wild brouhaha that has erupted in Israel today over Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon’s remarks on John Kerry and the so-called “peace process” are absurd.

Here’s what Ya’alon said publicly about the “peace negotiations” yesterday:

“The American security plan presented to us is not worth the paper it’s written on. It contains no peace and no security. Only our continued presence in Judea and Samaria and the Jordan River will ensure that Ben-Gurion Airport and Netanya don’t become targets for rockets from every direction. ”

Here’s what Ya’alon said publicly about Kerry:

“American Secretary of State John Kerry, who turned up here determined and acting out of misplaced obsession and messianic fervor, cannot teach me anything about the conflict with the Palestinians.”

Here’s what Ya’alon said privately about the “peace process” and Kerry:

“Abu Mazen [aka Abbas] lives and dies by our sword. Once we leave Judea and Samaria, he is finished. In effect, during these past months, there haven’t been negotiations with the Palestinians, but with the Americans. The only thing that can ‘save’ us is for John Kerry to win his Nobel Prize and leave us alone.”

Everything that Ya’alon said is absolutely correct. 

Yet to hear the deluge of criticism dumped on the Defense Minister today, one would think that the sky has fallen. 

Israel’s chief “negotiator” Tzipi Livni immediately accused Ya’alon of damaging Israel-US relations and her fellow party member Amram Mitzna chimed in that Ya’alon was “shameless” and said “It’s absurd and it lacks responsibility that he’s sending poison arrows to the Americans.”

The newly elected head of the Labor Party and head of the opposition Isaac Hertzog called for Tzipi Livni and Yair Lapid and added: “Kerry has been making every effort possible. It won’t be tolerated if he’s slandered. I’ve met with him twice this month and I found a determined man, a political leader who tells the same truths to both sides. We will always remember the strong alliance with the United States that Rabin supported. He always knew how to treat friends with respect, and to never call them messianic, delusional, obsessive, or use other derogatory names.”

The U.S. State Department was quick to pile on as well with spokeswoman Jen Psaki declaring: “The remarks of the Defense Minister are offensive and inappropriate especially given all that the United States is doing to support Israel’s security needs.”

By late this afternoon, we have had the unseemly spectacle of Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu rushing to defend Kerry (and Obama) at Ya’alon’s expense.

Peres’ comments were particularly flatulent: “We thank the president of the United States, Barack Obama, for his responsiveness to our security and intelligence needs. There is no doubt that he wants to see a Mideast that lives in peace. Secretary Kerry’s unusual determination to achieve peace reflects and serves Israel’s deep desire for peace and give a chance for a mutual understanding.”

The only support that Ya’alon has received has been from Ayelet Shaked of the Jewish Home party who said: “The State of Israel can’t sacrifice its security and it can’t outsource the state’s security to sensors. Mahmoud Abbas came out just this week with Nazi-like statements against the Jewish state, and Palestinian incitement is continuing. We need to straighten out our attitude and understand – there won’t be peace here.”

Again, your humble servant would like to offer three cheers to Ya’alon for finally stating the obvious: the American “peace” plan for Israel is an unmitigated disaster.
