Scarlett Johansson: A Rare Person of Principle

UPDATES 7 pm Israel time, Thursday, January 30 2014:

*Among the numerous terrorist incidents in the last 24 hours: an Arab man shouting “Allahu Akbar” was shot by IDF soldiers as he ran towards the Iron Dome battery in Eilat; a female Palestinian terrorist has been captured after she attempted to stab an officer in the Border Guards in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Issawiya; a Palestinian terrorist escaped after trying to run over IDF soldiers near Homesh in northern Samaria.

*The Netanyahu Coalition is still intact today as Naftali Bennett apologized to Benjamin Netanyahu for speaking the truth several days ago about Netanyahu’s crackpot proposal to have Jewish communities live under Palestinian sovereignty.

Well, it is more accurate to say that Bennett “sort of” apologized: “If the Prime Minister was hurt by my remarks, that was never my intention. I support the Prime Minister when I have to and I criticize him when I have to. It is my obligation.”

Scarlett Johansson has never been a particular favorite of your humble servant. Sure, there have been movies of hers that were very enjoyable such as “The Girl with A Pearl Earring”, “Iron Man 2”, and “We Bought a Zoo”. And while it is true that she has been famously declared “the sexiest woman alive” by Esquire Magazine, the truth is that I never really had strong feelings for “ScarJo” one way or the other.

Until now.

In early January, ScarJo signed a contract to become the global brand ambassador of SodaStream International Ltd.

SodaStream, as you may not know, is the in-home soda maker company that has one factory in Ma’ale Adumim just outside Jerusalem–a factory that employs 900 Palestinians with full Israeli wages and benefits who work alongside Israelis from the area.

Almost immediately, she came under scathing criticism from the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement (BDS) for supporting a company that “operates in the West Bank.”

BDS immediately called on Oxfam (the so-called human rights organization) to end its relationship with ScarJo because of  her “vocal support for illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian territory.”

And Oxfam immediately and pusillanimously kowtowed to BDS. In spite of a longstanding Oxfam policy honoring the independence of its ambassadors, Oxfam let it be known that it was taking ScarJo to task by issuing the following statement:  “We have made our concerns known to Ms. Johansson and we are now engaged in a dialogue on these important issues.”

Meanwhile, ScarJo was having none of this.

First she issued this statement:

“I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine. SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’ale Adumim factory every working day.”

Bravo ScarJo for calling out BDS’s absurd criticism of SodaStream!

Yesterday, ScarJo had another announcment:

“Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years. She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”

Bravo ScarJo for calling out Oxfam’s craven kneeling to BDS!

There is no other way to say it. Scarlett Johansson is a rarity in today’s world. She is a person of principle who is willing to stand up and fight for what she believes. She deserves all of our praise.
