Egypt: Terrorism in Taba, Morsi on Trial, A Buffer Zone with Gaza

SPECIAL NOTICE:

No israelstreet blog was published yesterday because your humble servant was heavily involved in Israel activism in our local community. It was an extraordinary day on which we collected money for a new bomb shelter in southern Israel, gave out numerous Israeli flags to children, and engaged in conversations with heretofore unknown Israeli supporters. I would like to thank you, dear readers, for your understanding.

UPDATES 7 pm Israel time, Sunday, February 16 2014:

A major terrorist attack has been averted near the Jewish community of Itamar. You may remember that it was in Itamar that 5 members of the Fogel family–mother Ruth, father Udi, and children Yoav (11), Elad (4) and Hadas (3 months)–were brutally slaughtered by Palestinian terrorists back in March of 2011.

Last night 4 heavily armed Palestinians from Qalqilya were spotted by security forces on their way to the community. They were captured shortly thereafter as they tried to run for safety to Awarta, the same Palestinian settlement in which the murderers of the Fogel family lived.

TODAY’S BLOG:

There has been significant news out of Egypt today.

To begin with, a major terrorist attack has been carried out against tourists in Taba–just across the Israel-Egyptian border from Eilat. A tourist bus carrying 33 South Korean tourists to the St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai was blown up killing its Egyptian driver and 3 of the passengers. Dozens more were critically wounded, many of whom have been transported to Eilat’s Yoseftal Hospital.

But not without absurd action from Egyptian authorities who initially refused permission for Israeli ambulances to cross the border.

Meanwhile in Cairo, Egyptian judicial authorities launched what they call “the biggest case of conspiracy in the history of Egypt.” Specifically, former President Morsi is charged with conspiring with Hamas and Hezbollah to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt. Prosecutors claim that Morsi was involved in this conspiracy as far back as 2005.

In case you are keeping count, Morsi is now on trial in three separate cases–and has been charged in two more. It looks like Mohamed will not be getting out of prison any time soon.

Finally, Egyptian forces spent Saturday destroying ten more tunnels and seven houses in which the ends of the tunnels were located. This was all part of a new Egyptian campaign to create a 300-500 meter buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt–a plan which calls for the destruction of dozens more Palestinian “homes”.

Your humble servant doubts that many of you remember the howls of protest from around the world back in 2001-2003 when Israel created a similar buffer zone between Israel and Gaza. The world accused Israel of everything from humanitarian violations to criminal expropriation of “homes”.

What is the world reaction to the creation of the new Egyptian buffer zone?

Absolute silence.
