11:00 pm, August 22 2014: Updates on the Israel-Hamas War

UPDATES 11:00 pm:

**The mortar shells that killed the 4-year-old boy in Sha’ar Hanegev this afternoon were fired from the UNRWA school in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza.

The boy’s name was Daniel Tregerman.

pic4year

May Daniel’s memory be blessed.

**The Iron Dome has had a remarkably bad day. In addition to the dead child in Sha’ar Hanegev,

a man was moderately wounded by a missile that exploded in downtown Beersheva

a direct hit was made on a house in Sderot

a kindergarten in the Eshkol region full of children narrowly missed being hit (12 meters)

three people were seriously wounded by a missile explosion in a synagogue in Ashdod in the afternoon

another three people were wounded, one critically, in the 9:43 pm attack on Ashdod when an incoming missile hit their car

In what seems remarkably reminiscent to what happened in the November 2012 war, the interception rate of the Iron Dome is beginning to noticeably drop–though the current reason defies easy explanation.

In 2012, the success rate dropped when Hamas discovered it could defeat the system by firing multiple volleys of 6 more missiles at a time. The misses today all occurred when fewer (3 to 4) were fired.

UPDATE 7:00 pm:

A day of direct hits in Beersheva, Ashdod, and Sderot which has seen numerous wounded and traumatized has turned into tragedy.

A 4 year old boy was killed in Sha’ar Hanegev a few hours ago as he ran to the bomb shelter in his house trying to protect himself as a salvo of Palestinian mortars hit a parking lot just outside. He never had a chance:

This is where the boy died.

This is beside the house where the boy died. He was killed by the shrapnel from the blasts.

If you ever wanted to know why parents and children are moving out of the Gaza border communities in droves, look at the picture.

If you ever wanted to see a manifestation of why families in the South believe the Netanyahu government has incompetently handled this war, look at the picture.

May the memory of the child, a child of Israel, be blessed.

By the way, the family of the dead boy had just returned to Sha’ar Hanegev after having been assured by PM Netanyahu and IDF Head Benny Gantz that it was safe to do so.

**The hysteria apparently gripping Hamas is palpable. Another 7 Palestinians have just been executed in the public square in Gaza City bringing to 18 the number shot there in the last 4 hours.

**42 missiles and mortars have struck southern Israel so far today.

One Grad missile has exploded in downtown Beersheva severely wounding a 53 year old man with shrapnel.

Downtown Beersheva in the last 90 minutes.

Downtown Beersheva in the last 90 minutes.

It may come as a surprise to you, dear reader, but all of Judea and Samaria is covered by the tsava adom (incoming rocket) network. Yesterday, Palestinian residents of Ramallah had to run to their bomb shelters because of rockets fired from Gaza by Palestinian terrorists.

Here is another missile that struck today, 12 meters from a kindergarten in the Eshkol region:

The preschool is in the background--it was sprayed with shrapnel.

The kindergarten is in the background–it was sprayed with shrapnel.

By the way, the kindergarten was packed with children.

UPDATES 7:00 am:

**If anyone is counting, this is Day 46 of the Israel-Hamas war.

The final updates from yesterday are that there were 48 missile and mortar launches out of Gaza yesterday totaling 144 missiles and mortars. As noted in the final israelstreet update last night, this was a reduction in both launches and projectiles from the Wednesday, but it remains a huge number.

Particularly since 90% of the missiles and mortars are being directed at the Eshkol, Sha’ar Hanegev, and Chof Asheklon communities. It is no surprise that the first missile fired today–about 30 minutes ago–was again fired at the Chof Ashkelon region.

**Please note the signficance of mortars–which we all tend to think of as less destructive than missiles. Yet in the case of this war, that is certainly not true.

Do you remember the story yesterday of the man who saved the nursery school teacher and child yesterday–and the picture of the kindergarten? The man’s wounds and the destruction in the nursery were both caused by mortar salvos. Those salvos often hit the Gaza border communities 7 and 8 at a time.

And it is worthwhile remembering that 2 out of Israel’s 3 civilian deaths over the last six weeks were caused by mortar explosions as were at least 10 of the 64 IDF deaths.

**The Israel news last night and this morning remains all a-twitter at the success of the operations that killed the major commanders of Hamas on Wednesday night.

As wonderful as those operations were, now is the time to press the advantage, and go after each Hamas leader–and each Hamas subcommander who replaced those killed.

It is no time to sit on our laurels.
