27 Days Until The Election

***We awoke at 5 am this morning in Ashdod to the sound of drones circling overhead–a sound that we have not heard since the end of the war with Hamas last August.

Why they were overhead is anyone’s guess, but a reasonable surmise might be the mortars that were fired out of Gaza toward Israel last night around 10 pm–mortars that exploded on the Hamas side of the border fence.

***Two major events are occurring today that may impact the election.

First, the Israel Supreme Court is ruling on whether or not to reverse the decision of the Election Commission that disqualified Haneen Zoabi and Baruch Marzel from running.

Whether Zoabi runs or not will probably have little impact; however, if Marzel is permitted to run, it will certainly be a boost to Eli Yishai’s new Yachad (Together) Party which has recently been rising in the polls.

Second, at 4:00 pm this afternoon, State Comptroller Joseph Shapira is releasing his long-awaited report on expenses incurred by the Netanyahu household. The family’s spending will be laid bare for all to see from how much toilet paper they use to how much ice cream they ate. Almost certainly, the Left will pounce on every detail of supposed mis-spending.

Two polls out in the last 24 hours show how uncertain the electorate seems to be or how biased the polling actually is. One poll from leftist Channel 2 has the Herzog-Livni party up by one seat over Netanyahu’s Likud (25-24); a different poll from the Right has Likud up by 3 (27-24) over Herzog-Livni. The truth is that the numbers have solidified in recent days–the two parties are likely dead even as all the numbers are in the 3% margin of error..

***In another election piece of news, the Israel Supreme Court ruled yesterday that Netanyahu’s speech to the U.S. Congress in two weeks can be shown on Israeli TV channels–with a five second delay so that a censor can delete any “electioneering” Netanyahu might do on his own behalf.

Of course, virtually every Israeli has cable or satellite TV and a plethora of international stations on which they can watch the speech with no delay.

A rock that smashed through a car windshield this morning at Azzun (photo: 0404).

This rock was thrown at an Israeli motorist this morning at the Azzun intersection in Samaria. It is no different, except for being somewhat smaller, from all of the other “rocks” that will be thrown at Israeli motorists and civilians all day and all night today.

It is a rock that can kill a person in two ways: it can hit you directly in the head and kill you, and it can kill you by smashing the windshield of your car and causing you to lose control and crash.

As partly noted in the caption above, this rock smashed through the front windshield but missed the driver who was then able to speed away to safety.

And where were Israeli security forces while this “rock” attack was happening?

They were a few miles down the road destroying Jewish homes in the upper level of the Adi community. “They” included Israeli administrative forces, security forces, IDF forces–a virtual army. And why were so many security personnel needed?

Because 40 Jewish community members were protesting the fraudulent demolitions.

And all of this was before 8 am this morning.

So begins a typical day in Judea and Samaria.
