17 Days Until The Election

By the numbers:

**32,000,000: the total number of people who passed through Israeli border controls and checkpoints last year (this includes Israelis traveling in and out of the country, tourists, workers, and Israelis and Palestinians moving around Judea and Samaria). Think for a moment about the security problem this poses for the country. During the year, there was an 8% rise in the number of infiltrator arrests, and a 66% rise in arrests related to guns, rifles, and ammunition.

**158: the total number of Syrians who have been treated at the Tiberias Medical Center since the Syrian Civil War began. Yesterday, two Syrians who had been wounded by a mine explosion were brought into Israel. A 14 year old boy had to have one of his legs amputated, and a 36 year old man suffered a broken leg.

**122: the total number of Palestinian terrorist incidents that occurred this week in Judea and Samaria. IEDs, Molotov cocktail attacks, and shootings–at individuals, cars, and buses: at least two soldiers were physically wounded and countless others suffered from trauma.

**Can someone please explain to your humble servant what in the world is going on at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.?

After spending the last week castigating PM Netanyahu in the most demeaning ways, we had White House spokesman Josh Earnest declaring from the White House Press Room yesterday that Netanyahu’s speech would not affect U.S.-Iranian nuclear negotiations at all.

Say what?

Is it the strategy of the Obama Administration to tear down Israel in every way, to encourage a Congressional boycott of Netanyahu’s speech, to brand our Prime Minister as a war monger who doesn’t know what he is talking about—only to turn around now and say that Netanyahu’s speech doesn’t make any difference anyway?

Totally malevolent, dangerous, and pathetic.

TODAY’S BLOG:

A very small item caught your humble servant’s eye this morning as he was looking at the news from Judea and Samaria.

It was in no way atypical; it merely described the fact that hundreds of Palestinians violently demonstrated in “the Jalazun refugee camp” (alternately spelled “Jalazone” ) yesterday.

What caught my eye was the reference to this Palestinian town as a “refugee camp”.

What do you think of when you think of refugees and refugee camps? Your humble servant thinks of people living in squalid conditions after traveling hundreds and perhaps thousands of miles after escaping persecution.

Let’s think about this in relationship to Jalazun.

Does this look like a "refugee camp" to you?

Does this look like a “refugee camp” to you?

Jalazun was created back in 1948 when about 300 Arab families left the Lod area at the time of Israel’s independence. These Arab families were not forced to leave–in fact, many of the Arab families in Lod (or as they called it “Lydda”) chose to stay and became Israeli citizens. There are currently about 20,000 Israeli-Arab citizens of Lod.

But the 300 families packed their belongings, took a 25 mile walk, and ended up a few days later at the site of today’s Jalazun just a few miles north of Ramallah. There they settled and built their new town.

From 1948 to 1967, they lived under Jordanian control. From 1967 to 1993, they lived under Israeli control. From 1993 until today, they have lived under Palestinian administrative control and Israeli security control. In other words, they live in Area B of Judea and Samaria.

During these last 22 years, the PLO, aka the Palestinian Authority, has done absolutely nothing to eliminate the status of Jalazun as a “refugee camp”. Instead they have done everything they can can to perpetuate it by turning over much of the town to the hideous UNRWA organization which does little except propagate the idea of Palestinian victimhood.

And so we have a situation in which the PLO refuses to let those in Jalazun become “regular Palestinians” and even insists that in any future agreement with Israel its residents must return to Israel.

Finally, as you may or may not know, there are 26 other Palestinian “refugee camps”– towns like Jalazun which are under Palestinian administration.

What a farce.
